Position: Safety Specialist (Field Based)

ERM is hiring a Safety Specialist regionally in Northern, CA (Sacramento to Bakersfield). In this critical role, you will be responsible for engaging with client and contractor team members in the field to facilitate safe work practices, embrace client safety culture expectations, and maintain compliance with the client’s Contractor Safety Program elements and other applicable safety regulations (e.g., Cal/OSHA, GO 95, 128,165, IBEW Red Book, T&D Grounding Manuals and contractor safety program requirements including TD-1464S).

The Safety Specialist will have broad knowledge of Safety compliance programs and, where required, Safety specialty areas. This position works to promote a safe work environment by confirming that contractors and the project team, at a minimum, clearly understand the roles and responsibilities related to reviewing drawings; identifying known hazards; and communicating policies, standards, and procedures applicable to the work.

The role includes responsibility of timely notification to management and the safety team about any safety issues. This is a full‑time (40hrs/week), fixed‑term position for a duration of 12 months
, renewable.

Responsibilities
  • Manage the receipt, review, provide feedback for contractor safety related documents (e.g. Programmatic Safety Plans, Project Specific Safety Plans [PSSPs], Job Safety Analyses [JSAs], Field Safety Observations).
  • Inspect site activities specifically during the kick‑off and implementation of medium and high‑risk scope activities.
  • Perform Field Safety Observations as established by the frequency and level for each contractor and subcontractor in accordance with the SSSP/PSP.
  • Provide on‑site occupational safety support to identify, prevent, and mitigate safety risks.
  • Document and retain safety documents in accordance with client requirements.
  • Take direction from client Supervisors and Management responsible for Contractor Safety.
  • Lead and/or participate in safety incident investigations, root cause evaluations, etc.
  • Assign and/or coordinate with team members to address corrective actions and communicate as appropriate with team members to prevent repeat occurrences.
  • Share safety information to all in an impactful, constructive, and results‑oriented manner.
  • Communicate safety trends and recommend safety corrective actions.
  • Capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surroundings or working conditions that are unsanitary or dangerous.
  • Has training, knowledge, or experience related to the work to be performed and knowledge of the appropriate mitigation measures for the associated hazards.
  • Has formal training to identify and mitigate hazards associated with specific high‑risk activities associated with high voltage work.
  • Familiar with Contractor Safety Program requirements.
  • Can reference, reinforce, and communicate expectations associated with Cal/OSHA safety regulations and requirements, IBEW Red Book, Grounding practices, GO 95,128,165 and contractor Safety requirements including TD‑1464S.
  • Schedule, initiate and lead in safety kick‑off meetings and participate in daily safety meetings with contractors.
  • Deliver training to support the communication of established processes or procedure requirements to stakeholders.
  • Serve as a resource for the development, implementation, and maintenance of the client company‑wide initiatives.
  • Utilize safety trend analysis (Field safety observations and other means) to identify and mitigate actions to correct gaps, introduce and implement innovative solutions with impact to correct gaps, and communicate opportunities for improvement.
Requirements
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience working with electric line construction crews.
  • Minimum two years’ experience performing safety observations over contractors.
  • Required to have taken OSHA 30‑hour or equivalent experience.
  • Physical demands required for the successful performance of this job include standing and/or walking for long hours in a day on uneven and steep terrain, and possibly during variable weather conditions.
  • Must be comfortable working in remote / rural areas.
  • Personal vehicle required.
