HDR is looking for new or recent electrical engineering graduates to join the Northern California Power Delivery Engineering team for exciting project opportunities and to help our clients further their clean energy goals. You will be part of a rapidly growing team working on a variety of engaging projects that will test your engineering skills and set you on a path for career growth.
As an integral part of a team, you will prepare engineering designs on substation projects ranging in scale from simple device replacements to large greenfield substation sites.
- Conduct analyses to develop design options or recommendations, engineering document review, drawing review and revision, provide field construction support and assist in the preparation of cost estimates and specifications.
- Prepare engineering drawings, calculations, analyses, reports and designs for electrical substations (Low, Medium and High Voltage).
- Prepare calculations, design sketches and redline drawings.
- Work with Designers and CADD Technicians to develop drawings in accordance with national design standards, safety codes and project specifications and requirements.
- Develop design deliverables including one-line diagrams, protection and control schematics, wiring diagrams, SCADA schemes, communications plans, substation physical layouts, material lists, conduit and cable sizing/routing, AC and DC systems calculations and sizing, and substation grounding.
- Conduct site visits during the design, construction and as-built phases of projects.
- Perform routine electrical engineering assignments using client and industry standards, with instruction from the Project Engineer or Project Manager regarding expected results.
- Complete projects with clear, specified objectives and limited variables.
- Work independently on small projects, or assist more-senior engineers on larger projects.
- Perform other duties as needed.
- Candidates without their EIT will be placed into a Design Coordinator job code and will be expected to obtain their EIT for career progression.
- Experience using electrical design software such as SKM Power Tools, ETAP or Easy Power is considered a plus.
- Willingness to have a strong in‑office presence 4‑5 days a week.
- Interest in engaging in technical and industry groups (IEEE, NAPE, EPRI, etc.).
- Due to client contract requirements US citizenship is required.
- Takes initiative and is flexible with embracing change in order to accomplish project goals.
- Thrives in a team environment and has strong communication, organizational and problem‑solving skills.
- Openness to being mentored by Senior Engineers and Subject Matter Experts to support individual growth.
- Prior internship/co‑op experience in power, utilities, renewables and/or construction industries is a plus.
- Desire to pursue growth opportunities and obtain CA PE registration.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
