Chief Estimator – Responsibilities and Qualifications
The Chief Estimator is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising the division’s estimating program, providing technical and administrative direction to ensure corporate objectives are met.
Responsibilities- Manage and administer department functions including operating budgets, staffing, wage reviews, work assignments, performance evaluations, bid results, and archives.
- Implement and maintain corporate estimating procedures using the corporate computer estimating system and database.
- Assist Executives, Business Development, and Project Management in determining appropriate project bids and developing strategies.
- Review all final estimate packages for accuracy and completeness before formal quotation.
- Review scope/proposal letters for bid and negotiated projects.
- Participate in presentations to corporate management and clients; may be responsible for closing the "sale".
- Provide technical assistance in negotiating contracts, change orders, and other requirements.
- Assist in the preparation of studies, materials, and methods, recommendations, and cost estimates as required.
- Advanced management or technical training preferred.
- Organizational, supervisory, and decision‑making/problem‑solving skills essential.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.).
- Familiarity with modern computer estimating systems.
- Ability to prioritize, manage multiple tasks, and adapt to changing priorities.
- Ability to work under time pressure, meet continual deadlines, and maintain a positive attitude.
- Effective oral and written communication skills for the position.
- Self‑motivated and capable of working independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to interact effectively and professionally with all levels of employees, vendors, clients, and others.
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a business‑related field.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in similar facility construction estimating and related functions, with thorough knowledge of corporate estimating objectives, strategies, and construction contracts.
- Experience may be a combination of education and technical/field training such as Engineering and estimating experience.

Up to 10% or as required. - General work environment – sitting for long periods, standing, walking, typing, carrying, pushing, bending.
- Work primarily indoors with varying environmental conditions such as fluorescent lighting and air conditioning.
- Noise level is usually low to medium; it can be loud on the jobsite.
- Occasional lifting of up to 30 lbs.
