Principal Geotechnical Engineer (GE)
We are seeking a Principal Geotechnical Engineer to lead complex geotechnical engineering projects from concept through construction. The role focuses on foundation design, engineering geology, environmental engineering, and earthwork solutions for infrastructure, commercial, and industrial projects. The Principal GE will provide technical leadership, ensure quality and regulatory compliance, mentor staff, and maintain strong client relationships while driving innovative and pragmatic geotechnical solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and deliver complex geotechnical engineering projects, including foundation design, earthworks, and environmental geotechnical assessments.
- Plan, oversee and interpret site investigations, sampling programs and in-situ testing to develop robust ground models and design parameters.
- Perform and review engineering geology assessments to inform geotechnical design and risk mitigation strategies.
- Develop foundation designs for shallow and deep foundations, retaining structures, and earth-supported systems consistent with codes and client requirements.
- Integrate environmental engineering considerations into geotechnical solutions, addressing contamination, remediation interface and regulatory obligations.
- Conduct slope stability, settlement, bearing capacity and groundwater analyses to support safe and economical designs.
- Prepare clear, concise technical reports, specifications, drawings and construction recommendations for clients and contractors.
- Provide technical review of calculations, reports and design deliverables to ensure accuracy, consistency and compliance with industry standards.
- Lead and mentor junior engineers and technicians, fostering technical development, quality assurance and a collaborative team environment.
- Coordinate with project managers, contractors, regulatory agencies and multidisciplinary teams to deliver projects on schedule and within budget.
- Support business development activities including proposal preparation, client presentations and technical input to win new work.
- Oversee construction-phase geotechnical services, including monitoring, testing, and responding to field conditions and design changes.
- Perform risk assessments and provide pragmatic mitigation measures for geotechnical hazards and constructability challenges.
Qualifications
- Bachelors or Masters degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering (or equivalent).
- Chartered Professional Engineer (PE/CEng) or equivalent professional registration preferred.
- Minimum 10 years of progressive geotechnical engineering experience with demonstrated leadership on major projects.
- Proven expertise in foundation design, engineering geology, environmental engineering and earthworks.
- Strong technical knowledge of soil mechanics, geotechnical analysis and slope stability methods (nice to have).
- Experience with groundwater analysis, ground improvement techniques and site investigation planning (nice to have).
- Familiarity with AutoCAD and Microsoft Project for design documentation and project scheduling (nice to have).
- Experience in project management, including budgeting, scheduling and client liaison (nice to have).
- Skilled in technical reporting, risk assessment and communicating complex technical issues to non-technical stakeholders.
- Practical understanding of construction materials, site monitoring and quality control procedures (nice to have).
- Excellent leadership, mentoring and interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively across disciplines.
- Willingness to travel to project sites and conduct fieldwork as required.
