Leapros has been engaged by a Northern CA based electrical contractor to fill a Controller position. This is a tremendous opportunity with a growing company that has exciting expansion plans and a great culture! The role is hybrid and located in the Sacramento area.
POSITION TITLEController
POSITION SUMMARYThe Financial Controller oversees the financial operations of the company and is responsible for budgeting, job costing, reporting, forecasting, compliance, payroll, and internal controls. The role ensures financial transparency, supports strategic decisions, and safeguards the company's financial health, particularly within the unique demands of commercial construction.
RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES- Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including AP, AR, GL, and payroll
- Produce accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial statements
- Maintain compliance with GAAP and company policies
- Manage cash flow planning and monitor liquidity
- Oversee and reconcile bank and credit card accounts.
- Coordinate with HR on employee compensation, benefits, and onboarding documentation.
- Set up and maintain job cost structures and budgets in accounting software
- Coordinate with project managers to review job costs, forecasts, and profit margins
- Ensure labor burden, materials, subcontractors, and overhead are accurately allocated
- Review and approve project billing, change orders, and retention tracking.
- Develop annual operating budgets in coordination with ownership and management
- Analyze budget-to-actual variances and report key insights
- Forecast revenue, costs, and cash flow to support decision-making
- Ensure timely filing and payment of taxes, payroll liabilities, and union/fringe reports
- Manage prevailing wage and certified payroll reporting
- Liaise with external CPAs, banks, bonding agents, and insurance providers
- Maintain internal controls to prevent fraud or financial misstatements
- Lead and manage accounting staff (bookkeepers, AP/AR clerks, payroll coordinator)
- Evaluate and implement software tools to improve financial efficiency (e.g., Quick Books Desktop, McCormick, Contractor Foreman, Procore, etc.)
- Develop SOPs for financial and administrative processes
- Identify inefficiencies and improve accounting processes and systems.
- Train and support internal teams on financial procedures
- Uses technology to their advantage
- Uses Chat- GPT or other types of AI as an assistant

- Provide financial dashboards and KPI reporting to ownership (e.g., gross margin, backlog, DSO, job profitability)
- Prepare bonding/insurance financial packages
- Prepare and assist with CPA audits or reviews
Prepare sales tax and use tax filings. - File or coordinate filing of business and payroll taxes.
- Solid organizational skills, including attention to detail and multi-tasking skills
- Technical knowledge of software programs (Google Workspace, docs, sheets, Gmail, Drive, Contractor Foreman, procore, ETC.)
- Excellent client interaction and Great communication skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Tactful in their dealings with clients, using good client service and interpersonal skills, and extreme communication with clients.
- Ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with clients.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- 5+ years in construction finance/accounting (electrical trade preferred)
- Strong understanding of job costing, WIP reporting, and revenue recognition
- Proficiency in Quick Books Desktop Enterprise Contractor's Edition or ERP, Microsoft Excel, and construction accounting software
- Experience with certified payroll, prevailing wage, and union reporting (if applicable)
- Strong attention to detail and ability to meet tight deadlines
