This position requires attendance in the City of Sacramento Police Department Community Service Officer (CSO) Academy. The CSO Academy is typically held in the Winter (late December/early January start) or Summer (late June/early July start). Appointment to the Community Service Officer I position will not be effective until the start of the CSO Academy.

Responsibilities The Community Service Officer I (Limited-Term) performs non-sworn duties in support of a variety of police operations. In addition, attends and participates in the Sacramento Police Academy or Community Service Officer Academy to receive basic law enforcement training in various laws, police procedures, law enforcement techniques, first aid, and to acquire physical and emotional skills.

Distinguishing Characteristics The Community Service Officer I (Limited-Term) is a recruiting and training level class used for qualified candidates to learn the duties of a Police Officer or Community Service Officer III in the Sacramento Police Department. Incumbents undergo a formal, comprehensive training program in a POST-certified Police Academy or Community Service Officer Academy. Incumbents are expected to attend accredited college-level courses to satisfy minimum qualification requirements of the Police Officer classification within their limited-term appointment.

Additional expectations include physical agility testing, ongoing physical training, and progression to higher classifications based on performance and POST certification.

The Community Service Officer I (Limited-Term) is distinguished from the Community Service Officer II in that the former is non-career, recruiting and training-level and is enrolled in or awaiting an approved academy, while the latter has completed an approved academy. It is distinguished from the Police Officer Recruit classification in that the latter attends the Sacramento Police Academy whereas the former may attend the Sacramento Police Academy or a Community Service Officer Academy.

Supervision Close supervision is provided by higher-level sworn or civilian personnel.

Examples of Duties

PRIOR TO TRAINING

  • Acquire working knowledge of department practices, procedures, equipment, and organizational systems.
  • Perform routine clerical duties including filing, checking, and recording needed information.
  • Operate standard office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, and other office machines.
  • Sort and file documents and records.
  • Provide basic assistance in research projects, special reports, and other division problems.
  • Perform related duties as required.

IN TRAINING

  • Receive instructions in: department organization, community service, crime prevention, rules of evidence, communication, EVOC, enforcement of criminal law, and more.
  • Learn firearm safety and weapon handling; physical fitness and defense techniques; basic criminal investigations; report writing; and other related skills.
  • Patrol and related duties as assigned, including handling prisoners in a manner protecting rights and welfare.

Abilities

  • Acquire knowledge of police work, laws, city ordinances, and first aid.
  • Understand geography and demographics of the city and common policing problems.
  • Write clearly and effectively in English; read and interpret complex technical documents.
  • Carry out instructions; observe, remember, record, and recall facts; analyze problems and take effective action in emergencies.
  • Present material orally to diverse groups; interact courteously with the public; establish cooperative relationships.
  • Operate police radio, MDC, and office equipment; develop skill in the use of less-lethal protection (OC).

In addition to the Abilities above, the CSO I in the academy requires the ability to develop skill in the use of firearms and undergo strenuous physical conditioning.

  • English usage, grammar, vocabulary, and spelling.

Education & Experience

High school diploma or GED required. No experience required.

Age & Special Qualifications

Must be at least 18 years old by appointment; free of felony convictions under California Government Code Section 1029.

Background & Medical

Must pass a background investigation including criminal history check, fingerprinting, polygraph, credit check, and drug history. Must pass medical examination, drug test, and psychological test.

Continue Education Eligible to enroll in an accredited college or university. Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License s of license is cause for discipline.
