Position Overview

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office is seeking a qualified individual to serve as the Sheriff’s Chief Deputy. The successful candidate will direct, manage, supervise, and coordinate the activities and operations of a service area comprising multiple major organizational functions. Under direction, duties include coordinating with other divisions, departments, outside agencies, and the general public, and performing related responsibilities as assigned.

There is an additional 3.35% Management Differential added to the posted salary for this class. Candidates must currently hold permanent employment status with Sacramento County.

• Principles and practices of police science, law enforcement administration, and community based policing
• Modern principles and practices of the administration, organization, and management of a custodial institution
• Proper and effective methods in deploying peace officers in emergent situations such as natural disasters, civil unrest, or other tactical situations
• Principles of modern penology and criminology
• Techniques for communicating and working with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds
• Principles of human behavior including people under physical, psychological, and social stress
• Criminal law with particular emphasis on the apprehension, arrest and prosecution of law violators
• Principles and practices of management and organizational theory, including planning, organizational design, business finance, business development, project management, and organizational effectiveness
• Principles and practices of supervision, discipline, leadership, mentoring, and training
• Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and other specialized applications related to area of assignment
• English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation

• Analyze and interpret police problems and criminal evidence
• Instruct and advise subordinates on all phases of law enforcement and police procedure
• Select, supervise, train, and evaluate sworn and non‑sworn staff
• Plan, coordinate, assign, and review the work of subordinate staff
• Investigate and resolve disciplinary issues
• Work independently, prioritize work, coordinate activities and meet critical deadlines
• Develop, monitor and interpret budgets and other financial documents
• Plan, manage, and complete complex work assignments
• Develop and maintain cooperative, effective working relationships with others
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing
• Interpret and apply applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations

Two years of full‑time paid experience in the class of Sheriff’s Captain in Sacramento County. A Bachelor’s Degree, or higher, from an accredited college or university may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

Incumbents in this class are required to maintain Continued Professional Training (CPT) in accordance with POST regulations.
