the Opportunity

The Information Technology Specialist I is responsible for performing as tier I/II computer and network support in a statewide information technology enterprise environment. The Information Technology Specialist I will aid in support of Cal OES Headquarters and all satellite offices when not activated to an incident. The Information Technology Specialist I will deploy to Regional Emergency Operations Center (REOC), Joint Field Office (JFO), Area Field Office (AFO), Local Assistance Center (LAC), or other locations to provide IT Helpdesk and network support in recovery activities.

This position may also be asked to support emergency response efforts in the State Operations Center (SOC). This position will require travel throughout California to provide on‑site visits. Investigate and resolve system and network performance issues on all Cal OES networked personal computers, plus related hardware and software. Install computer hardware and software on Windows-based computers and related IT support devices.

Provide hands‑on and telephone technical assistance to all Cal OES staff, while maintaining the highest levels of customer service. Prepare operating instructions and on‑the‑job training when needed. Attend meetings in support of CalOES employee support needs. Follow enterprise IT standards for problem documentation and resolution through the use of a ticketing system application.

Working in a fast‑paced environment on leading‑edge technology platforms and systems in a team environment alongside other IT professionals. Responsibilities will include participation in the analysis of user needs, systems analysis, innovation/function/design, documentation, testing, installation activities, evaluation, user support, maintaining an operational readiness posture, and training. The incumbent is responsible for imaging systems, maintaining network equipment, and go kits. The incumbent will perform regular team exercises with disaster response network solutions.

The incumbent will provide support to end users on desktops, laptops, mobile devices, and wireless networked equipment. The incumbent will have extensive troubleshooting skills of Windows clients operating in an Active Directory environment, cloud environments, and be comfortable supporting a range of hardware and software products, which include Microsoft products, Lotus Notes, Team Viewer, Apple, Cisco, Cradlepoint, and Satellite technologies.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Completed the FEMA IS100, IS200, IS700, and IS800 FEMA Training
  • Background deploying Mobile and Satellite Network solutions
  • Any of the following Certifications CompTIA A+ Network+ or Cisco CCNA
  • Prior work in an emergency response or recovery type environment providing IT support
  • Knowledge of the NIMS ICT Structure
  • Experience supporting Cisco Meraki and Webex Collaboration solutions

This position supports the day‑to‑day business operations which is handled in the office. This is not considered a hybrid telework position.
