Position: INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST III

Job Overview

Investigative Technologists (Information Technology Specialist III) wanted to conduct technical investigations and provide subject matter expertise in consumer protection, data privacy and security, and technology investigations and enforcement work in the California Attorney General’s Office. Top candidates will have demonstrated experience in applying deep technical expertise to ambiguous, novel, or fast‑moving investigative questions using skills in software engineering, design, product management, data science, or research.

Responsibilities

• Serve under the administrative direction of the Senior Assistant Attorney General, performing complex technical investigations and providing subject matter expertise in support of the Section’s consumer protection, privacy, and technology enforcement matters and initiatives, including investigations into potential violations of the Unfair Competition Law, the California Consumer Privacy Act, and other laws.

• Work closely with the section’s attorneys, auditors, analysts, investigators, and other professionals as an integral member of interdisciplinary investigative and enforcement teams.

• Support the section’s legislative, policy, amicus, education, and other work by offering technological expertise.

• Uphold the Office’s values of public service, fairness, equity, and protecting the public from technology‑enabled harms.

Working Conditions

Thesepositionsrequire residency in the State of California. These positions may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on DOJ's current telework policy. While DOJ supports telework, in‑person attendance may be required based on operational needs.

Requirements

The Minimum Requirements for this position are contained in the Class Specification. Candidates must meet these minimum qualifications to be considered.

Desirable Qualifications
  • Two or more years’ experience in executing or leading technology projects using skills in software engineering, cybersecurity, interface design, product management, data science, or research.
  • Ability to apply a range of technical approaches, including data science, systems analysis, penetration testing, forensic data extraction, or human‑centered design, to collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Basic familiarity with relevant laws, regulations, and policies of federal and state agencies, as well as federal and state legislation pertaining to privacy rights.
  • Strategic thinking and problem‑solving skills, including the ability to anticipate challenges and develop actionable solutions.
  • Experience in mobile technology, cloud systems, digital tracking technologies, and artificial intelligence.
  • Hands‑on experience building, auditing, maintaining, or pressure‑testing working systems.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate and present complex technical topics to a non‑technical audience.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills with the ability to multi‑task.
