- Provide legal advice and counsel on complex litigation involving areas such as disability accommodations, inmate health care, due process, transgender housing, gang management, and restricted housing reform.
- Communicate effectively in oral and written form, including presenting to a wide range of stakeholders.
- Lead meetings with multiple stakeholders and represent CDCR's interests during negotiations, settlements, and institution tours.
- Maintain strict adherence to deadlines and perform multiple tasks independently.
- Travel frequently throughout California for site inspections, interviews, State Personnel Board appearances, and other work-related duties.
- Participate in a fast‑paced environment, becoming a subject‑matter expert and collaborating within a team and independently.
- Admission to practice law in California and active State Bar license.
- Experience in complex and sensitive legal matters, including leadership roles and persuasive oral/written presentations.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple assignments and meet short deadlines.
- Willingness to work outside regular business hours and occasionally travel overnight.
- Must possess a California State Bar Membership License; a copy of the license is required prior to hiring.
- Maintain a regular work schedule, work at least 40 hours per week, be accessible via Department‑issued cell phone.
- Travel to and from worksites and correctional institutions within California, occasionally outside the state.
- Communicate clearly and effectively in writing and in person.
- Use electronic software and databases for legal research.
- Handle multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize work in a high‑stress environment.
- Maintain confidentiality of Departmental information.
- Provide sound legal advice, exercise reasonableness and judgment, and implement effective courses of action.
- Represent the department in legal venues, legislative bodies, administrative hearings, conferences, and other meetings.
- Collaborate with department staff, administrators, investigators, and executives, including attorneys and Chief Deputy General Counsels.
- Adhere to the California Rules of Professional Conduct and maintain active bar membership in good standing.
- Demonstrated self‑initiative.
- Experience in leadership roles on complex and sensitive legal matters.
- Experience making persuasive oral and written presentations in high‑level meetings on difficult subjects.
- Ability to work cooperatively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to handle multiple assignments with accuracy and prioritize work to meet short deadlines.
- Experience advising a government agency on complex public‑interest subjects.
- Willingness to create and promote an equitable and inclusive workplace.
