The California Lottery is a multi-billion-dollar enterprise headquartered in Sacramento. It is one of the few state agencies that is a revenue generator, not accepting taxpayer dollars from the state’s general fund. Our mission is to provide supplemental funding to California schools while simultaneously supporting local communities. Ninety-five cents of every dollar spent by players goes back to local communities in the form of contributions to public schools and colleges, prizes and retailer compensation.
In fiscal year 2023-24, the California Lottery provided over $2 billion in supplemental funding for California public schools, bringing the total contributions to more than $46 billion since we began in 1985. Lottery products are sold at more than 23,000 retail locations throughout the state. Product offerings include an average of 52 fun and entertaining Scratchers games and several draw games such as Powerball, Mega Millions, and Super Lotto Plus and daily games such as Fantasy 5 and Hot Spot.
Job Description and Duties:Under general direction of the Staff Services Manager II (SSM II), in the Facilities Operations and Maintenance Section (FOMS), the Chief Engineer II (CE II) manages the day-to-day operations, maintenance, and repair of California State Lottery (Lottery) facilities statewide. The Lottery has twelve facilities throughout California, many of which have achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification and are Zero Net Energy (ZNE) verified.
Facilities include the Lottery headquarters complex (HQ), nine district offices, and two regional distribution warehouses. The CE II shall travel occasionally to Lottery facilities throughout California. The CE II manages a team of engineering and maintenance staff that provide maintenance and repair services to ensure the health and safety of building occupants, physical security, and continuity of Lottery operations.
This position requires a current Chief Engineer II exam. If you need to take the exam or if your score has expired,
to gain list eligibility.
This position is headquartered at the Sacramento Headquarters. This position is not eligible for telework.
Effective July 1, 2025, specific Bargaining Units and associated Excluded State employees are subject to a salary reduction between 2% - 4.62% in exchange for hours for Personal Leave hours each month. For more details, please

Schedule:
Typical work times are Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with some flexibility depending on operations. May need to work outside of typical work times as job conditions require. This position may require carrying a Lottery-issued cell phone and being reachable outside of normal business hours.
b. Travel:
Required to drive to travel to other Lottery facilities.
- Knowledge of facilities and building system construction and operations including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, plumbing, electrical, mechanical controls, building automation, energy management, and fire-life safety.
- Experience managing and supervising skilled and semi-skilled engineering and maintenance staff.
- Experience managing, organizing, prioritizing, and assigning work assignments.
- Experience coordinating engineering and maintenance projects, including internal and external vendor resources.
- Experience in analyzing facility and system issues and providing recommendations to management.
- Experience with LEED and Zero Net Energy certified facilities.
