Job Summary

This analyst will work primarily as a member of a research team led by Garen Wintemute, MD, MPH. Dr. Wintemute helped develop the public health approach to violence and its prevention, directs CVP, and has more than 200 publications in the field; his research focuses on firearm violence and political violence. This analyst will be involved in research that addresses individual, social, and structural factors associated with risk for violence;

support for and willingness to engage in political violence; the illicit firearms market; and interventions to improve community and public safety. Activities will include study design and analysis plan preparation; data collection, management, maintenance, and linkage; coding and data analysis; interpretation of results; literature reviews; preparation of manuscripts, oral and poster presentations, progress reports, IRB protocols, and new project proposals;

and liaison with collaborators at CVP and other institutions and relevant nonprofit organizations or governmental agencies. The analyst will participate in other duties shared by CVP staff.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Doctoral or master's degree in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, sociology, criminology, or a related field.
  • Experience with scientific manuscript writing and data analysis in an academic or research setting.
  • Experience with performing and summarizing scientific literature reviews.
  • Experience with hypothesis-driven data analysis, including causal inference methods and methods appropriate to randomized trials.
  • Advanced knowledge of study designs and analytic methods for quantitative research.
  • High-level expertise in programming, managing, and analyzing data using SAS, R, or Stata statistical software.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with design and implementation of large-scale survey research and analysis of survey data.
  • Experience in research on social and structural determinants of health and research that addresses structural health and social disparities.
  • Ability to independently learn new statistical and epidemiologic methods and become proficient in new software packages to apply in epidemiologic studies.
  • Experience obtaining, managing, and/or analyzing large datasets for multidisciplinary research projects.
  • Experience with Microsoft Access, Excel, Sharepoint, or other data management software.
  • Experience with GIS methods to examine spatiotemporal patterns of events under study.
  • Experience in qualitative data collection efforts such as focus groups, semi-structured interviews, or related projects.
  • Experience with interview guide development, transcript coding, and analysis.
  • Experience with qualitative data analysis software.
  • Evidence of significant contributions to published research, manifested by authorship.
  • Knowledge of public health surveillance databases.
  • Knowledge and application of project management principles and concepts.
  • Ability to work on several projects concurrently involving several sources of oversight.
  • Ability to maintain detail orientation and prioritize, altering priorities as circumstances require.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English, both verbally and in writing, and prepare well-organized text, tables, and figures, conveying complex information intelligibly for both professional and lay audiences.
  • Possession of excellent organizational and interpersonal skills appropriate to project coordination responsibilities.
  • Possession of skills in facilitating collaboration with a variety of stakeholders with different priorities for project outcomes.
  • Ability to work collegially in a diverse environment, maintaining the highest degree of professionalism, confidentiality, and diplomacy.
  • Knowledge of and ability to adhere to University and departmental policies and procedures, and/or Sponsor requirements for maintaining confidentiality of all private information (clinical, criminal, and personal).
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, making significant creative contributions, with a multi-disciplinary group of researchers and staff.
