Job Description

Mid-level Wildlife Biologist (Biologist III) – Sacramento, CA

This position offers a hybrid schedule and the opportunity to contribute to CEQA compliance through environmental planning, permitting, technical writing and analysis, or leading field studies for a variety of projects in the Sacramento region. Our work spans water and energy infrastructure, flood control, general and specific plans, parks, and recreation facilities.

We are looking for a motivated individual with demonstrated experience in the responsibilities below. Candidates must be based in the Sacramento region, though the role will also support projects across California.

Responsibilities
  • Preparation of technical reports documenting survey or monitoring results.
  • Preparation of permit applications.
  • Preparation of environmental planning documents (CEQA/NEPA).
  • Leading surveys for special‑status fish and wildlife and nesting birds.
  • Use technical expertise to assess habitat for special‑status species and provide strategies and recommendations on avoidance and minimization of impacts.
  • Ensure construction activities comply with environmental requirements and/or permits.
  • Maintain current knowledge of regulations regarding special‑status fish and wildlife species.
  • Participate as an active and positive member of AECOM’s Environmental Planning & Permitting group in the Sacramento office.
  • Occasional travel in Central and Northern California.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, or a related field.
  • 4 years of relevant experience or equivalent in environmental consulting, analysis, habitat assessments, biological surveys, compliance and technical report writing.
  • Valid U.S. Driver License.
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 6+ years of relevant biological experience.
  • Experience writing Biological Assessments, CEQA/NEPA documents, and permit applications for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
  • Experience with special‑status species surveys for fish or wildlife in the Sacramento region.
  • Experience using field data collection tools such as ArcGIS Collector, external GPS receivers, and Trimble units.
  • Knowledge of common and special‑status fish and wildlife species in the Sacramento region.
  • Independent report‑writing and field surveying capabilities.
  • Experience leading field efforts that support permit applications and technical reports.
  • Experience leading monitoring during construction.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities with a positive attitude in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills with colleagues, clients, and agency representatives.
  • Federal recovery permit for special‑status species is desired but not required.
Additional Information

Salary range: $80,000 – $92,000 per year, based on education, qualifications, experience, and location.
