this Role

Fiber Tel is seeking an HDD Operator for our Sacramento, CA location.
This is a travel position focused on Sacramento, Vallejo and Santa Rosa.

A successful HDD Operator is specially trained in locating for horizontal/directional drill rigs and supporting equipment, handling variable‑sized underground bore holes, and pulling back conduit or pipe. The role involves operating various directional drilling equipment (Vermeer, Ditch Witch, Vac. Truck, Mud Truck, Excavator, Forklift, Dump truck, Locator, etc.).

Pay: $25‑36/hr, DOE

Responsibilities
  • All phases of telecommunication construction, including loading, driving, delivery, digging, removal and placement of construction materials and equipment.
  • Locate and operate horizontal directional drills for installation of underground conduit and fiber optic cable.
  • Maintain safety of the public and underground utilities.
  • Operate drilling equipment, assist in potholing and remediation, and set hand holes and tie‑ins.
  • Read and comprehend utility locates.
  • Set up equipment, including drills, water tanks and grounding.
  • Formulate and mix drilling mud according to site conditions.
  • Perform proper reaming and pull‑back methods for existing conditions.
  • Oversee laborers and crew, monitoring time usage.
  • Clean and maintain equipment, check fluid levels, perform pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections, and conduct required maintenance including winterizing.
  • Communicate daily with supervisors, submitting required reports (bore log, vehicle maintenance, crew time logs, etc.).
  • Follow job specifications, company policies and safety procedures on and off site.
  • Strive for optimal production while ensuring safety and quality.
Qualifications
  • Experience with rock drilling is a major plus.
  • Must pass a pre‑employment drug screen and background check.
  • Valid driver’s license (Class A CDL is a plus).
  • Good driving record required.
  • Basic knowledge of operating utility trucks and equipment safely.
  • Basic knowledge of hand tools and equipment safely.
  • Communication skills and ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift/carry 50 lbs regularly and up to 100 lbs as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous construction experience, preferably in telecommunications.
  • Knowledge of horizontal/directional drill locator/operator procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to perform locator/operator procedures and duties.
  • Willingness to travel.
Working Conditions

This full‑time hourly position requires at least 40 hours per week in an outdoor environment, exposed to extreme cold, rain, sleet, snow, humidity, high temperatures, high wind, natural gas, electrical shock risk and moderate to loud noise levels. The work environment varies daily, including changes in terrain, traffic and urban/rural settings.

Physical Requirements

Stand for up to 12 hours, lift regularly 75 lbs, and maintain vision capabilities (close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception). Must tolerate extreme weather and perform repetitive tasks such as climbing, kneeling, reaching and crawling.
