Role OverviewThe Data Center Technician provides working‑level data center knowledge and ensures the operational integrity and regulatory compliance of electrical, mechanical, and fire life safety systems. Responsibilities include maintaining processes for customer uptime, identifying and repairing issues, managing contractors, and meeting internal customers.
Responsibilities- Develop creative approaches to minimize operational costs, improve efficiency, and implement new strategies.
- Maintain and monitor mechanical, electrical, and fire life safety systems, including:
- Mechanical: chilled water systems, HVAC (roof‑top units, CRAC/CRAH units, humidification systems).
- Electrical: critical power distribution from utility/generator main switch gear through UPS systems to customer load.
- Fire Life Safety: wet sprinkler systems, pre‑action systems, detection devices.
- Test performance of electromechanical assemblies and electronic voltmeters.
- Read blueprints, schematics, diagrams, or technical orders to determine processes.
- Inspect parts for surface defects, install electrical or electronic parts, and align or assemble component parts using hand or power tools.
- Operate, monitor, maintain, and respond to abnormal conditions in facility systems.
- Analyze systems to ensure best practices for internal and external customers.
- Provide feedback to DCO Engineering on effectiveness of standards and processes.
- Work with contractors and consultants to review quality assurance for expansions, corrections, and upgrades.
- Collaborate with CF Ops Lead Technician to track and complete preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
- Ensure data center operates at maximum operational efficiency, recommend new technologies, and drive cost reduction.
- Manage systems to avoid unplanned customer‑impacting events and determine maintenance requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Maintain regular, predictable attendance.
- Understanding of mechanical, electrical, and fire life safety systems used in data centers.
- Knowledge of NEC, NFPA
70E, NFPA
72, NFPA
25, and building codes related to fire life safety. - Current industrial safety best practices, including lockout/tag‑out, arc‑flash protection, OSHA, and state regulations.
- Familiarity with data trending, tracking, and analysis, plus PC‑based monitoring systems.
- Ability to process hands‑and‑eye requests such as tape rotation, rack and stack, inventory hardware, power cycle devices, and patch cable install/removal.
- Hands‑on experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting large commercial and industrial systems such as chilled water systems, centric chillers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, water treatment systems, VFDs, pumps, HVAC equipment, CRAC/CRAH units, humidification systems, water heaters, filters, BMS, PLC controls, standby diesel generators, fuel/oil systems, and electrical generation and distribution.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Proficiency with MS Office Suite.
- Effective teamwork and coordination with contractors.
- Quick learning and problem‑solving skills.
- Logical analysis and multi‑tasking ability.
- Capacity to operate hand and machine tools, electrical tools, and forklifts.
- Comfortable working in a high‑stress, fast‑paced environment with shifting priorities.
- Availability for nights, holidays, and some weekends.
- High School Diploma required.
- Associate’s Degree or equivalent education/work experience and a minimum of 2 years in a mechanical/electrical position within critical facilities (data center, hospital, semiconductor, or power plant) preferred.
- CPR/First Aid and NFPA
70E certification required during employment. - OSHA approved forklift certification required, or willingness to obtain one after hire.
