Human Services Assistant; Special Skills Classes

Your Role

Here's what you will be doing:

• Perform program support duties under close supervision, including obtaining information, providing forms, and identifying program services, requirements, or procedures.
• Facilitate communication between department staff and disadvantaged or low-income individuals and groups.
• Use specific language and cultural knowledge to serve clients and families in a culturally competent and affirming manner.
• Translate and interpret between standard English and a language other than English as required.
• Act as a consultant regarding specific multi-cultural groups.

The company is looking for candidates with the following qualifications and skills:

• Six months of full-time paid experience in a public, private, or non-profit agency providing social services or financial assistance to the public.
• Proficiency in one or more of the following languages and cultures:
  Farsi (including Dari and Pashto), Lao, Russian, Spanish, and others as listed.
• Knowledge of problems, needs, attitudes, and behavior patterns of individuals lacking resources or education to reach self-sufficiency.
• Understanding of characteristics or problems unique to multi-cultural groups in employment, education, health, economics, and social customs.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with applicants, recipients, employees, other agencies, and the public.
• Willingness to accept and benefit from training.
• Ability to use office equipment such as computers, scanners, copiers, and faxes.
• Valid California Driver License, Class C or higher, may be required.
• Compliance with child and elder abuse reporting laws as a condition of employment.
• Ability to work in challenging conditions, including exposure to hostile persons, high crime areas, non-routine hours, and various climatic conditions.
