General Summary of Positions

Under the supervision of the SISD Transitions Center Assistant Principal, this individual will provide necessary and appropriate services to secondary level students who have been assigned by the IEPC process to a special education course of study. Services include completing vocational evaluations, arranging for vocational education and training, providing work study services, developing individualized vocation training, monitoring students’ vocational progress and completing follow‑up reports on special education graduates.

In addition, may be responsible for student caseload as determined by the Building Administrator.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Provide instructional or other support services to special education students in vocational education classes.
  • Provide consultation to vocational education personnel on behalf of handicapped students in their classroom.
  • Find appropriate work study placements for special education students who have completed their personal adjustment, prevocational and vocational training.
  • Visit the work site every 20 school days as required by Rule 340.1733 (M) and check with the employer regarding the student’s progress.
  • Arrange for and monitor regular vocational education, special vocational education, adaptive vocational education and individualized vocational training, as needed.
  • Serve as a liaison with the Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS) and register appropriate special education students for services.
  • Coordinate and attend necessary IEPC meetings regarding vocational placement, training, job placement, vocational evaluations, and vocational plans.
  • Assist with developing vocational training programs appropriate for special education students.
  • Assist with in‑service training programs for parents, teachers, and administrators on request.
  • Develop new training site opportunities for students.
  • Write a work study plan signed by the parent, school and employer before work begins. Set forth the education goals, job activities, hours, and wages.
  • Complete one year follow‑up on students who graduate or complete the program. Results will be submitted on an annual basis to the Building Administrator.
  • Complete or arrange vocational evaluations of special education students as needed. Administer vocational inventories to help students select realistic vocational goals.
  • Write a vocational plan for students after they have completed their vocational evaluation.
  • Design individualized vocational training plans (IVTs) for students not able to take vocational classes.
  • Maintain appropriate and orderly student file.
  • Work with SOAR/WBL students to develop post completion placements.
Other Responsibilities
  • Maintain professional competency by attending staff meetings, workshops, in‑services, conferences, and participating in professional organizations.
  • Willingness to receive additional training to improve job skills.
  • Meet with the Building Administrator on a regular basis.
  • May have a limited caseload as determined necessary by the Building Administrator.
  • Participate in School to Work meetings and activities as directed by the Building Administrator.
  • Other duties as requested/assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications
  • Full approval in any area of special education.
  • Master’s Degree Preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must have conflict resolution skills.
  • Leadership skills to work effectively with staff, school administrators, and outside agencies in the delivery of special education services.
  • Ability to work successfully with students, parents, community, and advocacy groups.
  • Ability to function in a total organizational context.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
