About The Role
Amsted Automotive Group, Propulsion Systems,
in Saginaw Michigan
, is seeking a technical expert in the design, development, procurement, and continuous improvement of metal stamping dies and related tooling. Ensure that all tooling is engineered for manufacturability, durability, safety, and cost‑effectiveness. Support new product launches, ongoing production, supplier interactions, and problem resolution to achieve optimal part quality and operational efficiency.
- Develop and/or review designs for stamping dies, fixtures, gauges, and related tooling to ensure manufacturability, dimensional accuracy, and alignment with customer specifications.
- Create detailed CAD models and drawings for tools, dies, components, and engineering changes.
- Work with internal and external teams to define tooling requirements, technical specifications, and timing expectations.
- Obtain and evaluate cost estimates for tooling, fixtures, gauges, machining services, and die construction.
- Support sourcing decisions by comparing supplier capabilities, cost, and manufacturability.
- Provide on‑site support for die construction, tryout, debugging, and PPAP readiness.
- Collaborate with tool shops during build phases to ensure production performance standards.
- Participate in die buy‑offs, capability studies, and troubleshooting activities.
- Lead root‑cause analysis and corrective actions for tooling‑related quality or production issues.
- Drive cost‑reduction initiatives through die optimization, material utilization improvements, and tooling standardization.
- Coordinate design revisions and engineering changes as production requires.
- Serve as a technical liaison between internal and external teams and customers.
- Support training efforts related to tooling best practices, maintenance requirements, and safe operation.
- Strong understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals (materials, mechanics, GD&T, and manufacturing processes).
- Proficiency in CAD software 2D and 3D (AutoCAD, Fusion
360, and similar) for modeling and detailing of tooling and die components. - Knowledge of metal stamping processes, die design principles, tool steels, heat treatment, and die maintenance practices.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and tolerance requirements and convert them into manufacturable tooling solutions.
- Root‑cause analysis and problem‑solving capabilities using Six Sigma or similar methods (DMAIC, 5 Why, FMEA, SPC).
- Understanding of statistical tools for capability analysis (Cp/Cpk), dimensional variation studies, and data‑driven decision making.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to multitask and support a fast‑paced manufacturing environment.
- Familiarity with safety standards and ergonomic considerations related to tooling and manufacturing operations.
