Job Description
Responsible for field investigations of bridges within the Region, assists other Regions as needed to ensure safety and reliability of MDOT trunkline bridges. Responds to emergencies, provides technical assistance on repairs, recommends maintenance priorities, and participates in bridge replacement and preservation programs. Makes independent field judgments on critical conditions, causes of deterioration, and emergency repairs. Assists with bridge scoping, estimating, field verification for the Statewide Bridge Load Rating group, strategy development, and the annual Call for Projects.
Requires a valid driver’s license.
The “Salary” listed above is a range that reflects the minimum rate at the entry (9) level through the maximum rate at the advanced (12) level. Based on education and experience, candidates will be reviewed to determine what level they are qualified for.

Required Education And Experience EducationPossession of a bachelor of science degree in engineering.
Experience- Transportation Engineer 9 – No specific type or amount is required.
- Transportation Engineer 10 – One year of professional engineering experience involved in transportation systems and programs equivalent to a Transportation Engineer 9.
- Transportation Engineer P11 – Two years of professional engineering experience involved in transportation systems and programs equivalent to a Transportation Engineer, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Engineer 10.
- Transportation Engineer Licensed 12 – Three years of professional engineering experience involved in transportation systems and programs equivalent to a Transportation Engineer, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Engineer P11.
Possession of a registered professional engineer license as required by the State of Michigan may be substituted for 6 months of experience at the Transportation Engineer 9-12 levels. This substitution may only be used once for any employee for qualification of appointment or early reclassification.
