The Engineering Intern supports the Engineering Department in the planning, design, inspection, and maintenance of public infrastructure projects within the City of South Haven. Under supervision, the intern will assist with technical and administrative tasks related to roadways, drainage systems, water and sewer utilities, the electric utility, geographic information systems (GIS), and capital improvement projects. The job involves office and field work assignments.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Assist in the preparation of engineering drawings, maps, and reports using AutoCAD, ESRI/ArcGIS, or similar software.
- Conduct construction observation and field inspections for municipal infrastructure projects and systems (e.g., water/sewer utilities, electric distribution, streets, sidewalks).
- Collect, organize, and analyze field data for municipal infrastructure systems.
- Support the development of cost estimates, bid documents, and project specifications.
- Review development plans and permits for compliance with local codes and engineering standards.
- Assist with public works maintenance tracking and asset management tasks.
- Perform administrative and research tasks as needed to support engineering projects.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
Minimum requirement includes second year of college pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, construction management, land surveying, geographic information systems, or related field.
Necessary
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Strong academic standing with coursework in civil or electrical engineering preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and familiarity with ESRI/ArcGIS, AutoCAD, Civil 3D.
- Basic understanding of civil or electrical engineering principles, municipal infrastructure systems, and construction practices.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to solve problems, work independently, and in a team environment.
