Summary

The essential functions of this position include performing cleaning and sterilizing duties of supplies and equipment and preparing them for use by the Hospital staff. Prepares case cart system for the Operating Room. Other functions may be assigned. Casual employees may be required to work additional hours and/or a schedule outside of the casual commitment of 4 shifts per month during the initial training period to become proficient.

Responsibilities
  • (50%) Case carts, supplies and equipment – Pulls OR cases following requisition forms; delivers carts to OR in a timely manner; restocks OB case carts; delivers sterilized supplies to nursing units; restocks monitor cart in ICU.
  • (30%) Decontamination of instruments and equipment – Empties soiled OR and OB case carts; disposes of linen and trash in proper receptacles; decontaminates instruments, case carts via the steam room, and cleans and refurbishes equipment according to established procedures.
  • (20%) Quality assurance tests of sterilizers – Performs and charts Bowie‑Dick test on vacuum steam sterilizers; performs biological tests on OR gravity and vacuum steam sterilizers; performs diagnostic tests and records results in Steris sterilizers.
  • Other duties and responsibilities – Demonstrates the My Michigan Health mission, vision and values; behaves politely at all times with patients, visitors and coworkers; organizes and prioritizes surgical case needs; manages assignments; documents accurately; shares information and reports significant findings; participates in regulatory surveys and performance improvement activities; assists with orientation and ongoing competencies; maintains professional demeanor and safe environment; keeps current with professional standards;

    prepares for emergency procedures; checks, lubricates and assembles instruments and trays; packages trays; assigns expiration dates and labels items; documents sterilizer loads and test results; handles wet pack and failed tests; cleans sterilizer chambers; maintains surfaces; orders supplies and linen; assists supervisor with special orders.

Experience, Training and Skills
  • Must have completed a Sterile Processing Program or have 1 year of sterile processing experience.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary for effective communication at all levels.
  • Must follow My Michigan Health blood‑borne pathogen and TB testing as required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Windows is required. Participation in further learning may be required.
Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions
  • Exposure to stressful situations, public contact, trauma, grief and death.
  • Ability to wear PPE including latex materials.
  • Mobility throughout facility without assistance; able to perform job functions.
  • Vision and hearing sufficient, with or without assistive devices.
  • Must sit/stand/walk for long periods; frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
  • Exposure to blood‑borne pathogens; must comply with testing.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain attendance, stay alert.
  • Dexterity for handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling; repetition may be required.
  • Physical demand: light; lift or carry 11‑20 lbs. occasionally; 10 lbs. frequently; walk/stand/push/pull as needed.
Other Comments
  • Credential: SPD CERT:
    Cert Sterile Process Tech.
  • Preferred:
    Certified in Sterile Processing (SPD Cert). If not certified, must complete certification within twenty‑four months and maintain it. Alternatively, have at least 1 year of experience in a Sterile Processing environment or have completed a Sterile Processing course.
