Registered Nurse

Job Summary

Registered nurses at Mary Free Bed at Covenant are a key member of a multi‑disciplinary team that collaborates to provide patient‑centered care. Within the Nursing Department, RNs coordinate, direct, delegate, and provide care to multiple patients. Using a patient and family‑centered care approach, each RN develops relationships with patients, families, and colleagues that enhance the quality of care provided. Nursing care is performed with compassion and courtesy, and each RN is responsible to follow departmental policies and service standards.

Patient and family education is a primary focus and a critical aspect of the interdisciplinary team’s efforts to assist patients to gain independence, apply adaptation strategies, and return to home.

Responsibilities
  • Quality Pillar of Excellence:
    • Quality nursing care – responsible for all nursing care, patient‑centered plan of care in coordination with attending physicians and other disciplines.
    • Quality improvement – participate in performance improvement, identify ways to improve care, report unexpected events or medical errors, assist with data collection and documentation audits.
    • Patient safety – promote patient safety by following policies, identifying and reporting unexpected events or near misses, communicating with Nursing Leadership.
  • Service Pillar of Excellence:
    • Customer service – demonstrate excellent customer service standards, handle confidential information discreetly, perform customer service recovery, recognize cultural and religious needs.
    • Physician and colleague relationships – maintain effective working relationships with physicians and other disciplines.
  • People Pillar of Excellence:
    • Employee competency – demonstrate competency to meet regulatory and accreditation requirements and align with recognized practitioner standards.
    • Professional work environment – encourage professional respect, accountability, open communication, and inclusion.
    • Employee safety – follow all policies and procedures related to employee safety and communicate risks.
    • Staff selection, development, and mentoring – assist with orientation, interviews, and preceptor duties.
    • Student preceptor and mentoring – collaborate for RN students’ clinical rotations.
  • Financial Performance Pillar of Excellence – Fiscal responsibility: follow payroll, patient chargeable items, identify cost saving opportunities, share with Nursing Leadership.
Age Specific Responsibility

Must demonstrate knowledge and skills to provide care appropriate to age of patients served; knowledge of growth and development over the lifespan; assess data and interpret necessary information to identify patient’s requirements relative to age‑specific needs.

Qualifications
  • Licensure:
    Registered nurse in the state of Michigan.
  • Education:

    Associate’s degree in nursing required;
    Bachelor’s degree preferred;
    Certification as a Registered Rehabilitation Nurse preferred.
  • Certification:
    Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Experience:

    Previous RN experience preferred (rehabilitation or acute care); strong critical thinking, decision‑making, delegation, leadership, time management, organizational and communication skills.
Physical Demands / Work Environment

Stand, sit, talk, type, read, and hear; use hands and arms to handle, feel, carry and work; frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, and rise from a kneeling position; independent mobility with frequent bending, reaching overhead; exert 20–35 pounds occasionally; may be exposed to blood‑borne pathogens and hazardous materials; competent with computer systems for documentation.
