Summary

9K for 2 years sign on bonus for qualified candidates. The medical oncology unit will consist of patients with a cancer diagnosis, medical step‑down patients, and general medical overflow. This position requires basic knowledge of the pathophysiology of cancer and ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for patients on this unit.

Casual Positions

Casual employees have no regularly scheduled work hours, but must agree to fulfill the minimum time commitments for as long as the position is held. The minimum is 48 hours per month, with 24 hours on weekends, and an annual requirement of 24 hours on holidays.

Responsibilities
  • Regularly assess patients’ needs and provide skilled nursing services as prescribed by the physician and accepted standards of nursing practice. (30%)
  • Provide direct patient care, including nursing assessment, medication administration, treatments, call lights, assisting with transfers, and responding to alarms. (30%)
  • Evaluate effectiveness of treatment plan and patients’ condition to make suggestions and participate in updating/revising the plan in collaboration with other team members. (20%)
  • Process physician/provider orders and perform physician‑ordered care accurately, completely, and in a timely manner. (10%)
  • Follow up regarding medication changes and order clarifications. (10%)
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Interpret information and report pertinent data to the physician, including clinical information.
  • Assess learning needs considering readiness, ability, preferences, and cultural/spiritual variables.
  • Provide education to meet individual needs and learning ability.
  • Participate in care conferences as assigned.
  • Develop and maintain good rapport with interdisciplinary personnel.
  • Coordinate care provided by patient care technicians.
  • Organize and prioritize needs of groups of patients or an individual patient.
  • Manage assignments and perform routine duties on the unit.
  • Instruct other team members when appropriate, explaining goals and rationale for individualized care.
  • Implement clinical and technical aspects of care in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Understand and use clinical pathways appropriately.
  • Remain calm and efficient in stressful situations.
  • Document accurately, clearly, and concisely, including pertinent clinical data.
  • Share information and report significant changes or abnormal findings to appropriate team members.
  • Participate in regulatory surveys and performance improvement activities.
  • Assist with orientation and ongoing competencies.
  • Provide a safe and secure environment for patient care.
  • Attend and participate in professional association activities and programs to stay current on regulations, guidelines, and professional standards.
  • Remain current on new developments by reading professional journals and attending seminars.
  • Understand emergency preparedness procedures.
  • Administer complicated IV therapy (antibiotic, blood, cardiac drips, and chemotherapy).
  • Assess patient for signs or symptoms of complications of cancer or treatment protocols.
  • Use central lines for drawing blood, administering chemotherapy, etc.
  • Interact positively with patients and families during severe stress situations.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking and integration of theory to practice for medical patients, oncology patients, medical step‑down, and telemetry patients.
  • Participate in Transition of Care course within the first 12 months after hire or transfer to the position.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Certifications and Licensures
  • RN:
    Registered Nurse
  • BLS:
    Basic Life Support (Within 1 month of hire or transfer)
  • TEAM ADVANCED:
    Techniques for Effective Aggression Management (Within 6 months of hire or transfer; employees hired on or before 8/1/2024 have 24 months to complete)
Education
  • Associate degree in Nursing required;
    Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred.
Experience, Training and Skills
  • Education outline for new hires or transfers new to oncology nursing.
  • Obtain ONS Cancer Basics course within 6 months (full‑time & part‑time RN).
  • Pass ONS Chemotherapy/ Biotherapy Fundamentals of Administration course within 12 months.
