Summary

Histotechnologists (HTL)/Histology Technicians (HT) prepare tissue samples for microscopic examination to assist pathologists in diagnosing diseases. They process, embed, section, and stain specimens using specialized techniques to ensure high-quality slides for analysis. This role requires attention to detail, technical expertise, and adherence to laboratory safety and quality standards.

Essential Work Functions
  • Receive, process, and prepare tissue specimens for microscopic examination.
  • Accurately differentiate between normal, reactive, infectious, and malignant cellular changes.
  • Perform embedding, cutting, staining, and slide preparation using specialized histology techniques.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, including microtomes, tissue processors, and automated staining machines.
  • Verify specimen accuracy and ensure proper labeling and documentation.
  • Follow quality control protocols to maintain consistency and reliability in slide preparation.
  • Assist pathologists and laboratory staff by preparing slides for special stains and immunohistochemistry procedures.
  • Maintain compliance with laboratory safety procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of practice.
  • Adhere to hospital safety protocols, infection control guidelines, and regulatory standards.
Required Qualifications
  • One year of recent experience as a Histotechnologist (HTL) or Histology Technician (HT).
  • Valid license when needed in compliance with any state regulations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • National certification through ASCP or equivalent such as AMT, AAB, HEW certifications.
  • Other certifications or licenses may be required for this position.
Required Essential Skills
  • Critical thinking, service excellence and good interpersonal communication skills.
  • The ability to read, write, & communicate in the English language is required.
  • Ability to read/comprehend written instructions, follow verbal instructions, and proficiency in PC skills.
  • Physical Abilities – Remain in a stationary position, move about, move equipment (50‑100lbs), push, pull, bend.
  • Interpersonal Skills – Work effectively with a variety of personnel (professional and ancillary) to present a positive attitude and professionalism.
  • Technical/Motor Skills – Ability to grasp, fine manipulation, push/pull and able to move about when assisting with procedures and/or using department equipment.
  • Mental Requirements – Must be able to cope with frequent contact with the general public, customers, and meeting deadlines under pressure. Must work under close supervision occasionally as well as independently. Must contend with irregular activity schedules and maintain continuous concentration to detail.
  • Sensory – Visual acuity, ability to effectively communicate.
