Job Title: Middle School Social Studies Teacher
The middle school teacher provides instruction for social studies. In addition, the teacher helps develop students’ academic, social, and motor skills.
Reports To: Principal
Responsibilities- Creates a flexible middle school program and classroom environment that promotes learning and personal growth for all students.
- Establishes effective rapport with students to motivate them to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for continued progress in accordance with each student’s ability.
- Demonstrates appropriate long- and short-term preparation for classroom instruction.
- Holds high expectations for all students and sees themselves as facilitators of student learning.
- Organizes and uses a variety of teaching techniques, strategies, materials, and technology to maximize learning of each child, individually and in-group settings.
- Assesses student progress, provides students and parents with specific feedback, and uses the results to adjust instruction as needed.
- Provides opportunities for academic support and challenge.
- Takes responsibility for teaching the district curriculum as outlined in the curriculum documents.
- Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicates these objectives to students.
- Keeps abreast of current developments in their fields and continues to deepen understanding of disciplines.
- Establishes and maintains a functional, attractive, orderly, and safe classroom environment that is conducive to learning and builds a sense of community.
- Develops classroom rules, behavior procedures, and maintains fair and just order in the classroom.
- Manages discipline in accordance with administrative regulations, school board policies, and legal requirements.
- Develops a repertoire of strategies to manage student behavior, individually and in groups, encouraging responsibility, self-control, self-discipline, and decision-making.
- Takes reasonable and necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Demonstrates a respectful, cooperative, and caring manner with students and adults in the school community.
- Assumes responsibility for effective functioning of the school, including necessary non-instructional assignments and student management throughout the building.
- Maintains complete records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
- Contributes to school effectiveness by collaborating with other professionals and participating in school and district activities such as staff meetings, parent-teacher conferences, teacher training workshops, and serving on committees.
- Pursues professional growth and development through staff development, postgraduate education, membership and participation in professional organizations, and attendance at regional, state, and national meetings.
- Actively participates in the Performance Based Teacher Evaluation process.
- Supervises students during school-sponsored after school/evening activities.
- Attends meetings and activities outside the normal school day, such as professional development, parent conferences, open houses, and staff meetings.
- Performs other related work as assigned.
- Classroom management requires daily attendance to meet students’ needs.
- Requires travel to work sites within a building.
- Interprets test results; reviews and interprets printed reports to obtain information necessary for decision-making, planning, and management in assigned areas.
- Operates specialized equipment such as computers.
- Provides written procedures for plan preparation and implementation; communicates student assignments and behavior problems with others in writing.
- Provides instruction to students; discusses education programs with teachers, administrators, and/or citizens; conducts individual or group meetings; works with students to reinforce learning assignments; assists with supervision.
- Reviews published educational materials for selection; observes and evaluates student performance; checks student work, corrects papers, supervises testing; assesses accomplishments of students and provides progress reports.
- Exerts 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or
- Exerts 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or
- Exerts 10 to 20 pounds constantly.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Vocational PreparationRequires successful student teaching experience and/or prior teaching experience.
Education PreparationRequires Missouri Teaching Certification at the Middle School level in Social Studies.
Requires a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
