Who are we?
FSDB is a state public school available at no cost to eligible pre-K and K-12 students who are deaf or hard of hearing, blind/visually impaired or deafblind, including boarding and transportation services. FSDB is nationally recognized for its comprehensive educational services, designed for the unique communication and accessibility needs of students. FSDB also provides educational outreach programs for children ages 0-5 and their families.
The FSDB experience provides students with the edge to do more, be more, and achieve more.
How you will make an impact
The incumbent of this position works as a Boarding Instructor within FSDB's Boarding Program.
* Demonstrates knowledge of the importance of staff: student ratios at all times which includes, but is not limited to, being present at work and punctual, following procedures for attendance, completing daily reports (i.e. Daily Chronicles, Night Reports, Incident Reports, Attendance Reports, etc.), meets all established deadlines, and remains in assigned area;
Supervises and monitors student behavior and documents positive and negative behaviors;
Promotes student development and self-esteem by providing assistance and supervision during student activities;
Utilizes the Individual Dorm Plan to build social and daily living skills, providing input during completion of the Functional Assessments, and contributing to a positive dorm environment.
* Effectively communicates with students in a developmentally appropriate manner and recognizes the individual communication needs of the students;
Effectively, consistently, accurately, and professionally communicates with parents, in accordance with the Boarding Program Policy.
* Demonstrates flexibility with scheduling which includes accepting changes in the work assignment, implementing appropriate recommendations regarding students, and adjusting expectations, interactions and behavior management styles based on the individual needs and abilities of the students.
* Complies with all school, department, and individual dorm policies and procedures which includes, but is not limited to:
Boarding Guidelines, Staff/Student/Parent Handbook, Standards for Disciplinary Action, School Policies and Procedures, Management Memorandum (Student Abuse, Self-Harm, Health Care Center, Staff/Student Relations, and Missing Students), Emergency Preparedness, Critical Incidents Reference Guide, Food Service Policies, and accurate completion of all FSDB required training. Maintains a safe and clean environment.
* Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
* Knowledge of the principles and techniques of effective communication;
* Ability to instruct deaf and/or blind persons in social and daily living skills;
* Ability to visually monitor and keep track of assigned students;
* Ability to ensure that health and sanitary conditions are maintained;
* Ability to encourage independence and self-development in others;
* Ability to plan, instruct and conduct leisure and recreational activities;
* Ability to prepare reports and maintain records;
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others and work cooperatively with all members of a work group;
* Participates in all required training and other employee development activities to improve skills and knowledge according to individual work unit needs;
* Ability to document and follow through on behavior programs;
* Ability to lift 20 lbs occasionally, stand for sustained periods of time, and walk about on foot throughout campus or for recreational outings;
* Ability to attain sign language proficiency level in accordance with FSDB O.P.P.1.24;
* Ability to complete training and administer skills acquired during CPR
* Ability to pass training and administer skills acquired during Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training (CPI);
Qualifications
A high school diploma or its equivalent; or Completion of a program of study in child care from a vocational/technical school; or one year of experience in working with disabled persons. Proof of High School Diploma or Completion of Child Care course will need to be provided at time of interview.
Preferred
* Two or more years of professional full-time work experience.
* American sign language skills
Sign Language Requirements
Applicants who are selected for hire for the afternoon shift in the Deaf Apartment Program Dorms/Deaf Residential Dorms will be required to attain an Intermediate Plus proficiency in sign language within one year of hire.
