OPS Instructional Assistant - Communication Support Position Number

Department:
Deaf Academics

Salary: $15.00/hr

Minimum Requirements:

Completion of 60 college semester hours from an accredited institution; or Associate of Arts Degree or higher; or high school diploma and a score of 464 or higher on the Para Pro Assessment. Proof of education will need to be provided at time of interview

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct communication support to low vision students through the use of American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Facilitate communication between the student, teachers, peers, and school personnel while promoting the student's independence and self-advocacy skills
  • Assist students in accessing classroom instruction, discussions, assignments, activities, and school-related events
  • Maintain close proximity to the student to ensure consistent access to communication throughout the instructional day
  • Collaborate with teachers and related service providers to support student success
  • Monitor student understanding and communication needs and provide feedback to appropriate staff regarding student progress and concerns
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student information in compliance with district policies and federal regulations
  • Maintain accurate records, logs, and documentation as required by the school district

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

(KSAs):

  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Knowledge of deaf and hard-of-hearing educational needs
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams
  • Understanding of confidentiality requirements and special education procedures
  • Ability to foster student independence and self-advocacy
  • Ability to complete training and administer skills acquired during Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training (CPI)
  • Ability to complete training and administer skills acquired during CPR

Condition of Employment:
Applicants under consideration for employment at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind will be required to complete background investigation. Fingerprints will be taken and sent to the Florida Department of Law enforcement and the Federal Bureau of Investigation for a background check of your criminal history record(s) at the state and national level via the Care Provider Background Screening Clearinghouse Education and Awareness website  FSDB is a drug-free workplace.
