New, full-time, non-ranking employees who meet the following criteria will advance one (1) step in the pay plan for every four (4) years of prior service. This increase will be limited to a maximum of a three (3) step increase.
Sworn, full-time service with another corrections agency or service in the United States Military in a corrections capacity.
4 years of prior service: $59,000
8 years of prior service: $60,000
12+ years of prior service: $61,000
Primary Purpose
The Corrections Deputy is a sworn position that is responsible for providing care, custody, and control of male, female, and juvenile offenders housed within the St. Johns County Detention Center. This position is responsible for responding to the needs of offenders while ensuring a safe and secure environment for inmates, citizens, and other employees in accordance with the agency policy, Florida Model Jail Standards, and the Florida Corrections Accreditation Commission.
Corrections Deputies must demonstrate professionalism and superior customer service for citizens and visitors. Within the agency, a Corrections Deputy may work a number of assignments. These assignments include:
Booking, Community Work Release Center/Work Squad, Courthouse Security/Transportation, and the Main Detention Unit.
Education and Qualification Requirements
- 18 Years or older
- Valid Florida Driver License
- High School Diploma or equivalent General Education Diploma (GED)
- CJSTC Corrections Certificate
- Must not have received a dishonorable discharge from any branch of the Armed Forces
- Must not have been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement
- Supervise inmates within housing units
- Instruct inmates to keep up with housekeeping and sanitation
- Periodically patrol inmate quarters and work areas
- Initiate counts of inmates at regular and irregular intervals
- Maintain control and discipline
- Prepare and maintain detailed reports and logs
- Enter and retrieve data from computer terminals
- Prevent the introduction of contraband into the facility
- Check inmates and their property for contraband
- Patrol the inside and outside of the facility to ensure the security and integrity of the facility
- Monitor and supervise inmate visitations
- Observe traffic in and around the facility
- Maintain control of all areas of the facility, including the food service area, the recreation yard, etc.
- Occasionally testify in court
- All other duties assigned
- Report to CORR Shift Leader
- Adopt problem solving skills
- Adhere to laws/agency policy/rules/ regulations/SOP/ procedures
- Maintain confidentiality/security of files and information obtained in the course of employment
- Maintain continuity and operational efficiency by accurate and timely dissemination of information to supervisor and co-workers
- Adhere to leave, overtime and attendance policies/procedures (i.e. arrive promptly, regular attendance at work, notification to supervisor regarding absence from work due to illness or untimely incidents, etc.)

- Work rotating 12 hour shifts, including nights, holidays and weekends
- Shifts may vary depending on agency needs (i.e. Alpha/Bravo shift due to hurricane deployment)
- Subject to mandatory overtime requirements as needed
- Hours may be irregular and occasionally long; subject to callout at any time due to emergencies
- Potential exposure to noisy environment, threat of bodily harm, hazardous conditions, various odors, chemicals, pathogens, unsanitary locations, and unsightly and disturbing crime scenes and images
- Work may require acts of physical endurance and agility
- Work under highly stressful conditions both in the jail and office environment
- Make decisions which affect the welfare and safety of the inmates and other employees, involving elements of personal danger and ability to act independently in various situations while exercising independent discretion in addressing emergency situations
- Must be able to meet the physical standard requirements completed by the Physical Abilities Test
