Description
Oversees and plans the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of the City's wastewater collection (gravity and pumped) system. Involves the skilled supervisory and mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of piping, pumps and conveyances of the City's wastewater collection systems, also including pump stations, stormwater and sewage pump stations. Work is performed under the general direction and supervision of the Manager, Utility Field Operations.

Examples of Duties
  • Supervises employees in Division and assumes responsibility for the efficient operation the pump/lift station, including the complex pump, mechanical, electrical and instrument and controls work in the installation, maintenance, repair, and replacement of equipment and peripheral components belonging to the City. Keeps record of employee time and prepares bi-weekly payroll. Interviews prospective employees to help determine their suitability for employment.
  • Assigns work involving first-time installation, replacement, maintenance, or repair of City lift stations.
  • Reviews plans of proposed projects and makes recommendations as to methodology of construction and materials used. Provides cost estimates of proposed projects based upon material take-off list. Responsible for assurance of conformance to City standards and specifications.
  • Coordinates special projects such as pump station survey and evaluation, pump performance and other date gathering assignments.
  • Keeps inventory and completes requisitions for supplies and materials necessary for the Division.
  • Prepares records of material and labor costs required for maintenance and construction. Assures work records are properly input, maintained, including as-built records. Uses computer tools for mapping, recordkeeping and for accountability, retrieval and work efficiency monitoring.
  • Responsible for overseeing the installation, troubleshooting and maintenance of PLCs and SCADA/Telemetry to ensure proper operating conditions.
  • Responsible overseeing and reviewing the programming of PLCs and SCADA/telemetry equipment.
  • Responsible for ensuring that the complex installations and maintenance services to electrical and pumping equipment, motors and control panels; lubrication of motors and equipment, and replacement of the packing in pumps and valves, wiring and bearings in motors and pumps is to City standards.
  • Responsible for troubleshooting, disassembling, repairing and replacing complex pumping systems and peripheral components, including but not limited to, engines, motors, pneumatic tools, pumps, gearboxes, various rotating equipment, panels, controls, and switches.
  • Responsible for conducting electrical, mechanical and physical tests of equipment to ensure normal and safe operation.
  • Ensures that all machinery used in the repair and maintenance of pumps and motors are operated safely and in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Trains and instructs employees in the safe and accurate operation and repair of equipment within the division.
  • Interacts with general public, utility customers and city staff in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Reviews check-up reports to acquire knowledge of current condition status of lift stations and raw water wells weekly and reports either orally or written to his supervisor.
  • Prepares and completes all required reports such as the EN5 Report to the regulatory agencies in the appropriate timeframe.
  • Performs more complicated electrical and piping repairs as well as installations of lift stations maintenance.
  • Prepares annual budget requests. Administers and monitors Division budget. Reviews monthly reports of expenditure for evaluation of conformance with budget.
  • Keeps up to date with current technology concerning new equipment and/or supplies pertinent to lift station and raw water wellfield operation and maintenance. Actively pursues opportunities for participation in seminars, workshops, and academic courses which enhance professional development.
  • Instructs those under his authority in the safe operation of all equipment and vehicles and safety procedures while working in pump stations and shop areas. Represents Division on Safety Committee.
  • Interacts with utilities customers and the general public in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Conducts personnel evaluations for all employees of the Division following prescribed City procedures and time schedules. Prepares evaluations to objectively measure the performance of an employee based on the applicable job description and using prescribed City forms.
  • Subject to overtime work and responds to job-related emergencies when needed.
