Bindery Operator

• Set up, adjust and operate a variety of auxiliary binding machines with multiple cutting heads, control surfaces, or attachments (e.g., inkjet and mailing devices, case making and decorating equipment, folders, cutters, collators, stitchers, drills, binding/gluing machines).
• Set up automatic bindery machines with multiple functions and station capabilities (power paper cutters, power collators and gatherers, power folders, power speed binders) to form a complete bindery and finishing unit that processes printed sheets into final books, catalogs, manuals, directories, magazines, or other products.
• Inspect equipment for safety issues.
• Operate automatic adhesive binding machines (perfect binders) with interrelated process stations that are fed collated sheets or signatures and perform functions such as vibrating, milling, roughening, gluing, covering and delivering or stacking completed items.
• Make adjustments to coordinate multiple work stations on a single machine.
• Direct crew in all aspects of production.
• Monitor quality, output, and productivity.
• Train others in new processes and lean methodologies.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Ability to read and interpret written work orders or other job specifications for bindery requirements, indicating machine operations and maintaining dimensional accuracy; independently decide on equipment to be used.
• Ability to calculate distances, clearances, and fits when combining machines.
• Skill in using standard and specialized tools and devices to adjust and maintain bindery machines.
• General knowledge of complex bindery machines (fully automatic binding machines, multiple station collators, and folding units) to perform typical folds of printed materials.
• Thorough knowledge of setup, operating requirements, procedures, capabilities, and limitations of one or more bindery machines to perform folding, collating, and cutting of printed materials into finished products.
• Knowledge of quality and machining requirements for various coated and uncoated paper stocks.
• Skill in setting up and adjusting machines for finishing operations to manage weight, color, machinability, and paper stock quality and to prevent impressions on printed materials.

The pay range for this role at the specified location is $21.20 to $28.65 per hour. The actual rate may vary based on education, skills, experience, proficiency, performance, shift, and location. In addition to base salary, total compensation may include a sign-on bonus, overtime, shift differential, call-in, and stand-by pay, depending on the role.
