Location: St. Charles
Overview
The On-the-Job Trainer plays a central role in preparing new and transition employees for success on the production floor. The position involves hands‑on training, coaching, and documentation of skill development to support a skilled, confident workforce.
Responsibilities- Train new‑hire and job‑bid employees on essential job skills, safety practices, and job‑specific techniques, including knife handling and sharpening.
- Observe employees on the production floor, provide real‑time coaching, and retrain when skills or behaviors do not meet expectations.
- Document training attendance, daily observations, and employee progress with accuracy and attention to detail.
- Prepare training progress reports, support job‑bid qualification reviews, and identify trends involving tools, job tasks, or employee performance.
- Collaborate with area supervisors to communicate training needs and performance concerns.
- Participate in M‑IQ tier meetings, use Leader Standard Work (LSW) to plan and prioritize tasks, and support onboarding by leading plant tours and training employees on proper PPE use.
- Rotate to different shifts or travel to other facilities as needed to support production and start‑up projects.
- Take on additional responsibilities as assigned to ensure training and operations run smoothly.
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and at least 2 years of experience in manufacturing operations.
- Alternately, 6 years of manufacturing experience within the Smithfield industry may substitute for a high school diploma or GED.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills to guide and support others.
- Bilingual ability is a plus for connecting with a diverse workforce.
- Strong interpersonal skills, self‑motivation, time‑management, and the ability to operate independently with minimal supervision.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel; familiarity with SAP is preferred.
- Work in a plant environment with wet or humid conditions, extreme cold and heat.
- Work near moving mechanical parts; exposure to fumes, airborne particles, and chemicals.
- Lift or move up to 60 pounds as required.
- Vision: close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
- Physical tasks: sit, stand, walk, use hands, reach with arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, or crawl as required.
- Noise level is moderate but can be loud in the production area.
Pay range: $16.83 – $26.44 per hour. Compensation is based on role scope, location, qualifications, internal equity, and market considerations.
