Indirect Tax Manager

Job Summary

Reporting to the Senior Director of Tax, the Indirect Tax Manager is responsible for managing U.S. and Canadian indirect tax compliance, reporting, forecasting, audits, and related process improvements. This role partners with Treasury, Accounting, Accounts Payable, and external advisers to promote accurate and timely compliance across the organization for railcar repair and railcar leasing.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Tax, the Indirect Tax Manager is responsible for managing U.S. and Canadian indirect tax compliance, reporting, forecasting, audits, and related process improvements. This role partners with Treasury, Accounting, Accounts Payable, and external advisers to promote accurate and timely compliance across the organization for railcar repair and railcar leasing.

• Oversee U.S. sales and use tax compliance, reporting, and forecasting.
• Oversee U.S. property tax compliance, reporting, and forecasting for repair facilities.
• Prepare annual property tax filings for the company’s railcar fleet and project annual tax expense.
• Prepare and/or review monthly Canadian GST/HST filings (approx. 25 returns)
• Prepare any support related to US and Canadian audit requests.
• Review railcar fixed asset reconciliations and organize results to support annual fleet renditions.
• Research U.S. and foreign indirect tax laws and regulations to support compliance and sound business decisions.
• Maintain the ONESOURCE Indirect Tax engine used for internal tax calculations and reporting.
• Process monthly tax payments and coordinate funding and timing with Treasury.
• Analyze plant vendor data and reporting, including exemption certificate documentation.
• Manage or assist with coordinating documentation for sales and use tax audits, property tax audits, refund claims, and any GST/HST return adjustments.
• Identify opportunities to strengthen controls, improve processes, and enhance the accuracy and efficiency of indirect tax reporting.

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting
• Strong knowledge of U.S. sales and use tax and property tax processes
• Experience with Canadian GST/HST reporting is a plus
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including advanced Excel skills
• SAP experience is preferred but not necessary
• Experience with ONESOURCE Indirect Tax or a comparable tax engine is preferred.
• Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with a high degree of attention to detail and workpaper documentation.
• A strong sense of accountability and ownership, with the ability to prioritize competing responsibilities and resolve accounting issues as they arise.
• Adaptable, collaborative, and effective in a team-oriented environment.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills.
• Willingness to develop knowledge in other areas of tax and support team priorities and deadlines.
