Overview

The School Program Teacher at the Kane County Regional Office of Education (ROE) provides direct instruction to students in detention at the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center (KJJC). The primary focus of the position is to improve the academic and behavioral outcomes for students served.

This position supports the mission, vision and goals of the Regional Superintendent of Schools and acts as an effective and professional representative of the ROE.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Partner collaboratively with general education teachers within a co‑taught framework to deliver integrated content instruction, ensuring that students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) are accommodated and modified seamlessly within the curriculum.
  • Provide intensive, direct instruction, on‑site at the KJJC, in small groups or resource settings focusing on transitional and functional skills, remediation, and IEP‑directed goals.
  • Effectively differentiate instruction using relevant data, specialized curriculum, and instructional technology to accommodate diverse learning styles and academic levels largely impacted by trauma.
  • Formally evaluate student progress, collect appropriate data related to student goals, and accurately draft and prepare compliant IEP paperwork.
  • Keep general education teachers, facility staff, and administration informed of student needs, IEP goals, and necessary accommodations.
  • Attend student IEP and re‑evaluation meetings as requested from home districts (as necessary in Kane County).
  • Develop, monitor, and execute robust transition and career plans integrated into student IEPs, ensuring alignment with Illinois state standards for post‑secondary goals.
  • Instruct students in essential independent living skills, functional communication, self‑advocacy, and career/workforce readiness strategies.
  • Problem‑solve and collaborate with home school districts, ROE staff, administration, community agencies, and families to facilitate a smooth academic and social transition when students exit the secure facility.
  • Create, maintain, and refine lesson plans and specialized instructional materials in subject areas of assignment.
  • Create and maintain rules and procedures to manage student behavior consistent with the KJJC facility behavior management system.
  • Implement curriculum, resources, and technology provided, consistently, and with integrity.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and other departments within the ROE in the execution of office functions and programming.
  • Participate in relevant professional learning opportunities sufficient to ensure professional growth in meeting the needs of the position.
  • Exhibit an excellent attendance record.
  • Maintain a professional and welcoming environment conducive to supporting those the ROE serves and staff collaboration.
  • Any and all responsibilities assigned by the Instructional Facilitator, Assistant Regional Superintendent, or Regional Superintendent.
  • Qualifications Education

    A bachelor’s degree in Special Education or a related field is required.

    Experience

    Two years of special education teaching experience in a public school setting is preferred.

    Licensure

    A valid Professional Educator License with an endorsement in Learning Behavior Specialist I (LBSI) is required.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of content and pedagogy and IEP compliance laws.
  • Ability to effectively differentiate instruction.
  • Ability to work effectively with student populations largely impacted by trauma, abuse and crime.
  • Ability to work effectively within a secure, locked facility, operated under strict measures of security and safety protocol.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of core principles of effective instruction, including but not limited to student assessments, instructional technology and learning standards.
  • Demonstrate desire and ability to work positively with the population that this position serves.
  • Strong working knowledge of computer systems and digital tools, including word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, email, and database platforms; demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and Google Workspace is required to effectively support organizational operations.
