The Crime Specialist performs systematic and analytical processes directed at providing pertinent information relative to crime patterns and trend correlations to assist operational and administrative personnel in planning the deployment of resources for preventing and suppressing criminal activities, aiding the investigative process, increasing apprehensions, and clearing cases including analyzing information to identify similarities, patterns, and trends among different offenses, identify suspects, and predict criminal activity.
- Research, analyze, and compile data from a variety of sources to determine similar offense patterns, series, trends and offenders.
- Use crime analysis techniques to view, evaluate, and forecast future crime occurrences by comparing unique descriptors and/or variables as well as developing and comparing target/suspect profiles, suspect/crime correlations and offender characteristics.
- Organize, maintain and enhance manual and automated systems for storage and retrieval of crime and offender information.
- Initiate and disseminate crime analysis reports and bulletins to individuals and groups within the department and law enforcement community that articulates specific crime problems and offenders, and enhances directed patrol and investigative activity.
- Prepare and insert into maps, charts, graphs and written reports crime data as may apply to specific crimes by area.
- Assist with the development of agency tactics, strategies, and planning in response to crime trends; create or modify existing programs aimed at targeting specific problem areas and addressing specific series, patterns, and trends.
- Examine existing laws, codes, and regulations to determine those most advantageous for enforcement in addressing current crime trends.
- Assist with the development of new analytical capabilities, systems and processes.
- Compiles daily, monthly, quarterly and annual reports, as requested.
- Bachelor's degree is preferred accompanied with one to two years of experience in communications, crime analysis or information or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities. Computer skills in Adobe Suite, Microsoft Suite, and GIS software application required. Valid driver's license required.
- Ability to classify, compute and tabulate data and information.
- Ability to compare, count, differentiate, measure, and sort information.
- Ability to assemble, copy, record and read data and information.
- Ability to utilize a wide variety of data and information such as newspaper copy, police reports, computer software manuals, statistical reports, policy manuals, correspondence and to perform other clerical and operational tasks.
- Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing with police officials, city administration, citizens and others. Ability to persuade, convince, and/or train others.
- Ability to accurately add, subtract, multiply, and divide, and calculate percentages, fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the direction, control and planning of an entire program or multiple programs.
