The City of Saint Charles Police Department is currently recruiting for the position of Evidence and Property Custodian. This position manages and controls all property and evidence that is seized for processing and maintains evidence for presentation in criminal cases. This includes the custody, control and care of all seized property.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all- inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Processes evidence.
- Maintains evidence records, logs and data bases.
- Sorts evidence and places in lockers. Retrieves evidence.
- Determines evidence analysis based on requests.
- Prepares laboratory forms and arranges transportation to the lab.
- Prepares court documents regarding evidence and property.
- Researches property records and case depositions.
- Notifies owners regarding recovery of property and releases property.
- Provides direction to officers and detectives as to procedures for properly packaging evidence and completion of evidence receipts.
- Maintains working knowledge of laws, rules and regulations regarding evidence and property seizure, collection, custody, storage and release.
- Transports evidence to Courts.
- Stocks supplies.
- Assists in training part time clerks.
- Performs other duties as directed.
- High school diploma or equivalent or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Must possess or be able to obtain, by the time of hire, a valid state driver's license.
- Any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Ability to analyze and categorize data and information in order to determine the relationships.
- Ability to persuade, convince and/or train others, including the ability to act in a lead worker capacity.
- Ability to advise and interpret how to apply policies, procedures and standards to specific situations.
- Ability to utilize a variety of advisory data and information such as evidence custody sheets, lab reports, photos, medical examiners report, prosecutor's report, notification reports and evidence publications.
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing with Department personnel, attorneys, medical examiner, lab personnel and the general public.
- Ability to work hours as assigned.
- Ability to testify in court on a witness stand and present all the facts for depositions.
- Ability to add and subtract, multiply and divide, calculate percentages, fractions and decimals.
- Ability to use functional reasoning and apply rational judgment in performing diversified work activities.
- Knowledge or the ability to learn and conduct searches for people or property after training and REJIS testing/certification for database access.
- Ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory and/or judgmental criteria.
- Ability to learn and make use of Department databases such as CARE and Case Management.
- Ability to work under moderately safe and comfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors such as toxic agents and disease poses a risk of injury or exposure.
