Job Summary
The Registered Nurse (RN), Medical Surgical Float Pool provides nursing care during patients’ hospital stays, coordinates care with interdisciplinary teams, and supports Saint Louis University Hospital.
Responsibilities- Perform comprehensive nursing assessments and reassessments; conduct age‑appropriate admission and transfer assessments; gather family input when appropriate.
- Document findings accurately and completely.
- Assess post‑operative and post‑invasive procedure patients.
- Document education and discharge needs of patient and family.
- Conduct patient reassessments, noting changes in condition and response to care.
- Establish and evaluate care plans based on assessment data, patient diagnosis, lab data, and physician orders.
- Identify short‑ and long‑term goals; formulate nursing interventions; incorporate evidence‑based practice into plans.
- Collaborate with health team members to coordinate daily plans of care.
- Communicate patient care through handoff reports, SBAR, bedside shift reports, and other communication tools.
- Administer and document medications accurately; monitor IV fluids, blood products, and parenteral nutrition.
- Complete referrals and request consultations as indicated.
- Provide restraint care: identify alternatives, apply restraints, monitor response, document use, and educate peers.
- Manage pain: assess pain, incorporate patient beliefs, implement prevention techniques, involve family, and consider alternative methods.
- Conduct abuse assessments; report signs to physician, Risk Management, and Social Work; take appropriate action.
- Clarify physician orders, transcribe and implement them accurately; use read‑back and chain of command when needed.
- Recognize changes in patient condition and take appropriate nursing actions; report deviations from care per policy.
- Integrate infection control bundles and fall/skin injury prevention practices; complete audits when required.
- Evaluate effectiveness of care, education, and plan of care; modify as necessary.
- Provide specialized care to patients at high risk for injury.
- Demonstrate adherence to quality standards, participate in learning experiences, and maintain professional competence.
- Act as a resource to new employees, patients, families, and staff; supervise and teach students/new staff nurses.
- Practice standard precautions; dispose of hazardous waste; maintain a safe, clean environment; adhere to dress code.
- Report risk management concerns using eSRM; complete all mandatory annual requirements (license, BLS, TB, influenza, ethics, safety, security, abuse, blood‑borne pathogens, competency, etc.).
- Deliver courteous, respectful service; meet patient, family, and colleague needs; communicate effectively.
- Assist in developing and implementing nursing goals and performance improvement activities; participate in unit and hospital improvement processes.
- Provide age‑appropriate care and utilize age‑specific interventions for infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients.
- Use resources efficiently, prioritize responsibilities, and document chargeable supplies.
Minimum Education:
Licensed Registered Nurse in the state of Missouri.

Prolonged standing/walking; occasional lifting, positioning, and transfer of patients; occasional reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching.
