The Operating Room at BJH is separated into five Pods that each align with different surgical specialties:

• Pod 1:
  Pelvic specialties – gynecology, urology, colorectal, and general surgery
• Pod 2:
  Trauma, trauma services (wound treatment), reconstructive surgery for ortho (hip/knee replacement, orthoscopic knee and shoulder) and plastics repair
• Pod 3:
  Cardiac, transplant, vascular, heart/lung transfers
• Pod 4:
  Ophthalmology, Ortho, ENT, MIS, Plastics, and General Oncology
• Pod 5:
  Ortho, Spine, Neuro, ENT, kidney/liver transplants

• Educate patients and their families about the communication process during the procedure, what to expect, and any support resources, as appropriate.
• Serve as liaison between physician and the patient and family.
• Demonstrate competence and independent practice in roles of scrubbing and/or circulating for all HSO‑defined surgical services.
• Use established safety techniques in preparing for and assisting with surgical procedures; provide and set up necessary instruments, supplies and equipment for different types of surgeries or procedures according to established safety requirements and physician preferences.
• Keep patients safe from adverse events associated with surgery/procedure, including but not limited to infection, burns, pressure ulcers, wrong‑site surgery, etc.
• Have knowledge of wound stage classifications and observe the patient during procedure to detect possible complications and/or breaks in sterile technique; furnish emergency equipment and supplies to prevent adverse outcomes.
• Preserve and label operative specimens for analysis.
• Participate in activities that promote safety, quality, and regulatory compliance.
• Participate in professional development and lifelong learning.
• May participate in orientation and preceptorship of new staff, as needed.
