Construction Materials Technician

The construction materials technician plays a key role in an engineering consulting environment by supporting field operations and ensuring that construction materials used on site meet required quality standards. This position focuses on testing, inspecting, and documenting the performance of materials such as concrete, asphalt, and soil to help maintain safety, compliance, and durability on construction projects.

• Perform field and laboratory tests on construction materials, including concrete, asphalt, and soil, to verify compliance with project specifications and industry standards.
• Conduct concrete testing activities such as pulling and preparing cylinders, performing concrete slump tests, and breaking cylinders to determine strength and performance characteristics.
• Carry out soil testing and compaction tests to confirm that subgrade and backfill materials meet required density and quality criteria.
• Operate and properly handle a nuclear gauge and other testing equipment to measure material properties and document results accurately.
• Inspect construction materials on site to confirm quality, consistency, and adherence to quality control and quality assurance procedures.
• Record, organize, and report test results in a clear and timely manner to support project documentation and decision-making.
• Support field operations by coordinating with project teams, following established testing protocols, and helping resolve material-related issues as they arise.
• Follow all safety procedures and best practices while working on active construction sites and in testing environments.

• Hands-on experience with concrete testing, including preparing and pulling cylinders, performing slump tests, and breaking cylinders for strength evaluation.
• Experience with materials testing for construction projects, including concrete, asphalt, and soil.
• Knowledge of soil testing methods and compaction testing procedures to verify material density and suitability.
• Familiarity with quality control and quality assurance practices in construction materials testing.
• Ability to perform concrete inspection to ensure materials meet project and industry standards.
• Experience operating a nuclear gauge and other field testing equipment safely and accurately.
• Understanding of American Concrete Institute (ACI) practices related to concrete testing and inspection.
• Ability to work effectively in field environments and follow detailed testing protocols and safety guidelines.

• ACI-related training or certification in concrete testing or inspection.
• NICET-related experience or certification in construction materials testing.
• Background in construction, engineering consulting, or a similar technical field.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy when recording and reporting test data.
• Effective communication skills to coordinate with field crews, engineers, and project stakeholders.
• Ability to troubleshoot testing issues and adapt to changing site conditions.

This role primarily operates in outdoor construction environments where the technician works on active job sites performing field tests on materials such as concrete, asphalt, and soil. The position involves regular use of testing equipment, including nuclear gauges and concrete testing tools, often in varying weather conditions and on uneven surfaces. The technician may move between field locations and testing facilities as needed, following all site safety requirements and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment and attire suitable for construction and fieldwork.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Saint Charles, MO.

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $28.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
