Overview

Under general direction, perform and/or supervise the performance of various inorganic and organic chemical analyses, physical and biological analyses. Performs laboratory work of moderate difficulty in analyzing and testing samples related to wastewater, bio solids, ash and other materials encountered in the wastewater treatment process, or air, water, and land pollution.

• Conducts and/or oversees technicians in the performance of regular and special chemical, biological and physical analyses of treatment plant discharges, industrial wastes and natural watercourses
• Operates and calibrates various laboratory instrumentation including gas chromatograph mass spectrometer, atomic absorption spectrophotometer, and other analytical systems
• Evaluates test results for conformance with accepted procedures
• Utilizes a laboratory information management system to record, transmit and document test results
• Conducts various biological tests to evaluate toxicity
• Trains technicians in the proper use of equipment and test performance
• Collects data to evaluate technician performance using various quality control procedures

• Maintains inventory of chemicals and equipment
• Performs related work as required or as delegated by supervisor
