Job Summary

The public safety and security officer is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for students, staff, and visitors by patrolling the campus, reporting crime, and enforcing university policies.

Essential Job Functions and Performance Indicators

The intent of this job description is to provide a representation of the types of duties and level of responsibility that will be required of positions given this title. Employees may be directed to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

Job Responsibilities and Execution

  • Secure premises by patrolling property, monitoring surveillance equipment and inspecting buildings and access points
  • Uphold university’s standards and reputation by complying with legal requirements of the Clery Act
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the university’s Emergency Action Plan
  • Enforce campus parking regulations
  • Complete incident/accident reports for missing or stolen property and criminal activity; assure accurate reports, including detailed, complete observations and information
  • Conduct surveillance
  • Interview witnesses and obtain signatures

Service Excellence

  • Support the university mission and serve as an ambassador of the Q2 culture of service excellence
  • Model, support and hold others accountable to the university’s values – integrity, dedication, excellence, creativity and teamwork
  • Accompany visitors, students and employees on campus upon request
  • Provide public assistance, including lockout services, first aid, vehicle jump‑starts and traffic direction

Communication, Teamwork and Collaboration

  • Prevent loss and damage via consistent reporting of concerns
  • Educate violators on proper policies and procedures

Job may require other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Acceptable criminal background check
  • Security license must be obtained within 60 days of employment
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certifications must be obtained in a timely manner
  • State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) Incident Command System (ICS) 100, Higher Education (HE) and 700 courses passed with certifications obtained
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Security, military or law enforcement experience preferred

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures
  • Ability to use good judgement, think critically and problem solve
  • Ability to mediate, intervene and remain calm during emergencies, hostile situations and physical altercations
  • Ability to work with large groups of students
  • Effective communication skills

    Strong personal integrity
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office
Work Environment

General office setting. Indoor and outdoor – often extreme – weather conditions. Ability to work different shifts including days, afternoons or midnights. Some exposure to hazards and physical risks, which require basic safety precautions. Essential worker designation. Fully‑On Ground.

Physical Abilities
  • Ability to work effectively at a computer for up to eight hours daily
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function
  • Ability to use a two‑way radio
  • Ability to walk and stand for duration of shift
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds
  • Ability to report to work during emergencies, unless otherwise notified
