CHIEF MECHANIC
ST. CHARLES COUNTY HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT
Starting Salary: $57,265.68 per year
This is a full-time, 40 hour per week position which includes a full range of benefits including Paid Time Off, Extended Medical Leave, Holidays, Employee Health, Dental, Life, Disability, Retirement, and Tuition Assistance programs.
Job DescriptionThe purpose of this position is to oversee the maintenance, repair and safe operation of all Highway Department vehicles, heavy equipment, and machinery. This position combines hands‑on technical skills with supervisory responsibilities ensuring a high standard of equipment reliability and performance. The work is performed under the supervision of the District Supervisor.
- Leads, trains, and supervises Equipment Mechanics.
- Diagnoses mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues on a wide range of vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Prioritizes repair and maintenance tasks in consultation with the District Supervisor.
- Provides recommendations to modify, upgrade, or replace County vehicles and equipment.
- Schedules and assigns repair work.
- Utilizes vehicle diagnostic scanners and software.
- Repairs equipment and assists mechanics as needed. Installs new equipment and materials in highway department equipment when needed. Overhauls engines and transmissions. Rebuilds pumps and motors.
- Obtains parts and supplies bids. Orders parts and supplies. Checks on parts availability. Consults inventories for parts, lubricants, tires, belts, fuels, etc.
- Designs and fabricates parts and tools.
- Able to ARC, MIG, or TIG weld.
- Maintains accurate records of maintenance, repairs, inspections, and equipment history using Microsoft Excel.
- Provide technical guidance and trains personnel in equipment repair and maintenance.
- Changes oil and repairs tires on County equipment.
- Picks up parts and supplies.
- Answers the phone.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
