Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Science Teacher to join our team at North Lake Alternative High School for the 2026-27 school year. The ideal candidate will create a nurturing and stimulating learning environment that meets the unique needs of alternative education students, fostering the intellectual, social, and emotional growth of each learner. This full-time position requires a commitment to educational excellence, flexible and creative instructional approaches, collaboration with colleagues, and engagement with families to support student success.

• Develop and implement engaging lesson plans aligned with Michigan Science curriculum standards and the unique needs of alternative education students in a hybrid learning setting.
• Create a positive, inclusive, and culturally responsive classroom environment that encourages student participation, critical thinking, and collaboration.
• Assess and monitor student progress through formal and informal evaluations, providing timely feedback to students and parents.
• Adapt teaching methods and materials to meet the diverse learning needs, styles, and life experiences of alternative education students.
• Foster a love for learning by incorporating real-world connections, hands‑on activities, laboratory investigations, technology, and project‑based learning into the curriculum.
• Collaborate with other teachers and staff to develop interdisciplinary units and school‑wide initiatives that support student re‑engagement and success.
• Communicate regularly with parents, guardians, and support staff regarding student progress, behavior, and classroom activities.
• Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with educational best practices, alternative education strategies, and trends in science instruction.
• Maintain a safe and organized classroom and laboratory environment, ensuring adherence to school policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
• Support the social and emotional development of students by promoting positive behavior, conflict resolution skills, and pathways toward graduation.
• Build trusting relationships with students who may have experienced barriers to success in traditional school settings.
• Work collaboratively with counselors, interventionists, and community partners to address the academic and personal needs of students.

• Bachelor's degree in Science Education or a related field.
• Valid Michigan teaching certificate with a Science endorsement.
• Experience teaching at the secondary level preferred; experience in an alternative education setting a plus.
• Strong understanding of adolescent development and effective teaching strategies for non‑traditional learners.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with students, parents, and colleagues.
• Proficiency in using technology for instruction, assessment, and communication.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team‑oriented environment.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
• Commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable learning environment for all students.
• Demonstrated ability to connect with and motivate students who have experienced challenges in traditional educational settings.

Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

182‑Day standard teacher work schedule as set forth in the Non‑Unit Employment Contract.

• Communicate successfully through speaking with a variety of persons.
• Sit and stand extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech in classroom levels, and throughout the school building.
