Overview
The Senior Safety Manager, Mission Critical, is a senior safety leader responsible for driving safety excellence across Veit's Mission Critical construction projects. This role provides leadership, consultation, and oversight for large-scale data center and mission critical projects, ensuring alignment with Veit safety standards, client expectations, and regulatory requirements. The role partners with operational teams, project leadership, clients, trade partners, and safety professionals to foster a proactive safety culture focused on incident prevention, hazard recognition, planning, accountability, and continuous improvement.
The position supports Veit's growth in the mission critical market by delivering world-class safety performance and ensuring every employee returns home safely. Extensive travel and field presence are required (approximately 90–100% travel).
- Mission Critical Safety Leadership:
Serve as the safety leader for Veit's mission critical and data center construction operations nationwide; build partnerships with project executives, managers, superintendents, clients, and trade partners to achieve world-class safety performance; champion a zero-incident culture; provide safety leadership across all project phases; integrate safety into production planning and daily field activities. - Project Safety Oversight &
Risk Management:
Oversee safety performance on multiple projects; conduct site audits, inspections, and field assessments; lead risk reviews and participate in JHA/AHA and critical lift reviews; verify site-specific safety plans, permits, and client programs; identify emerging risks related to schedules, logistics, energized systems, confined spaces, crane operations, excavation, and high-risk work; ensure timely corrective actions. - Client Partnership & Mission Critical Excellence:
Build trusted relationships with clients, owners, construction managers, and trade partners; represent Veit during client audits and safety reviews; ensure compliance with project-specific safety requirements and contracts; support pursuits with safety expertise. - Incident Prevention, Investigation & Continuous Improvement:
Lead investigations of incidents and near misses; conduct root cause analyses and develop corrective actions; track safety metrics and leading indicators; use data and lessons learned to drive improvements and share best practices across operations. - Safety Program Development & Compliance:
Ensure compliance with OSHA and other safety requirements; develop and improve safety policies, programs, and procedures; stay informed on regulatory changes and industry trends; coordinate regulatory inspections and serve as a point of contact for safety agencies when required. - Training, Coaching & Workforce Development:
Mentor and develop site safety professionals; provide coaching on hazard recognition and risk mitigation; develop and deliver safety training; support workforce development to improve safety competency and engagement. - People Leadership &
Collaboration:
Lead safety personnel supporting mission critical operations; build relationships across functions; foster accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and employee engagement; influence stakeholders to achieve safety objectives.
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Construction Management, Engineering, Environmental Health & Safety, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Minimum 10+ years of progressive construction safety experience, with at least 5 years in large-scale mission critical, data center, industrial, or complex projects.
- Experience leading safety programs across multiple states; strong knowledge of OSHA regulations, ANSI standards, and construction safety best practices.
- Proven ability to influence project teams and leaders; experience conducting incident investigations and root cause analyses; strong analytical and problem-solving abilities using safety data and metrics.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills; ability to work in fast-paced, high-growth environments; proficient with MS Office.
- Preferred Qualifications:
CSP/CHST/OHST, OSHA 500, First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor; experience supporting hyperscale data center projects.
- Hire, train, coach, develop, and conduct performance reviews for direct reports; manage performance and ensure onboarding and cross-training within the department.
- Provide leadership and development for Site Safety Specialists and Safety Consultants; lead safety efforts across multiple projects and regions.
- This is a safety-sensitive position. Valid driver's license; able to pass pre-employment and ongoing substance testing.
- Ability to travel nationally (90–100%); willingness to work extended hours, weekends, and non-traditional schedules; frequent field presence on active sites and mission critical facilities.
