Wages

$18.53

New hires:
Entry level rate $14.53/hr current employees: see salary schedule. This position meets the $4.00 Special Education Differential pay outlined in the memorandum of agreement between DCSD and the Davenport Association of Para Educators.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide research-based social skills instruction and intervention under supervision of certified teacher.
  • Be willing to attend any additional required evening trainings or meetings during the school year or during the summer.
  • Be willing to accept feedback from specialists and special education facilitators regarding implementation and use that feedback to implement changes in instruction.
  • Be willing to follow directives of classroom teacher, building administration, and district administration.
  • Be willing and able to work with students who are explosive in nature and engage in physical and verbal aggression toward others.
  • Work with students with learning, behavior, physical, and/or cognitive disabilities (mild, moderate, severe), including students diagnosed with autism and spectrum disorder.
  • Provide services for special education students as needed in the special or general education setting.
  • Under direction of special education teacher, provide academic assistance, behavior interventions, and instruction of social skills and daily living skills.
  • Attend field trips with students as necessary.
  • Maintain regular attendance to meet services in the IEP and ensure provision of FAPE.
  • Analyze situations and respond appropriately.
  • Interact appropriately with all students; work as a team player in the classroom, cafeteria, hallway, etc.
  • Show good interpersonal skills with students and staff.
  • Accompany students to and from the bus; supervise them in classroom, lunch, building, field trips, and work sites.
  • Work individually with one student or a small group as assigned.
  • Assist students with restroom and hygiene needs.
  • Assist in physical education and general education classes as directed by the special education teacher or principal.
  • Manage environment and protect students during the school day.
  • Follow multiple behavior plans and implement changes when directed.
  • Recognize the need for and initiate activities with students.
  • Be flexible with assignments, changing duties when needed and directed.
  • Climb stairs; walk long distances in the building and community.
  • Navigate the city bus system with training.
  • Follow specific procedures for teaching new skills.
  • Provide instruction, supervision, and behavior modification at community and building work sites independently.
  • Collect and graph accurate data as guided.
  • Complete necessary paperwork accurately and timely as guided.
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills and rapport with culturally diverse students.
  • Support the district’s MTSS for behavior and academics.
  • Sign the vacancy notice acknowledging duties and expectations for those receiving the special education differential pay.
  • Pass the Medicaid Fraud background check before hire, bidding, or transfer to special education; recheck regularly.
  • Physically restrain students if trained and as directed by the principal.
  • Handle daily assignment changes to meet students’ needs.
  • Remain calm and respectful when students are in crisis.
  • Engage in collaborative work and contribute to team planning.
  • Lift as necessary.
  • Assist with toileting, diapering, and hygiene care as needed.
  • Stand or sit for extended periods.
  • Ride bus with students as required.
  • Participate in and direct extensive physical activities.
  • Supervise out-of-classroom activities during the assigned work day.
  • Model positive attitude and teamwork for students.
