Special Education/Adult Basic Education Teacher - Special Teacher

Job Summary

The Department of Corrections is hiring a Special Education/Adult Basic Education Teacher at the St. Cloud facility. This position will provide literacy, English Language Learning, secondary credential, post‑secondary preparation, and/or other adult basic education (ABE) instruction in a well‑managed and comprehensive instructional environment to support Incarcerated Person (IP) Personal Education Plans. The teacher will develop and use curriculum based on state ABE standards and integrate methods of instruction – including whole class, small group, and individual instruction – to serve all types of learners and learning styles.

The teacher will assess, monitor, and record IP progress, direct teaching assistants and IP tutors to promote effective IP learning, plan and provide appropriate learning experiences for students with disabilities in a variety of educational settings, and create a flexible program that allows students with disabilities to benefit from the general education curriculum when supported with supplemental aides, accommodations, and other needed supports.

The teacher will also serve as the special education case manager for an assigned caseload, ensuring that due process procedures and timelines comply with federal and state regulations, as directed by the DOC Director of Special Education.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college/university.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Professional K-12 Special Education Minnesota teaching license.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Possession of a current Minnesota Tier 3 or 4 teaching license.
  • Experience working in an education setting.
  • Experience working in a correctional setting.
  • Experience teaching Adult Basic Education.
  • Experience teaching Special Education.
  • Full‑time teaching experience as a licensed teacher.
Physical Requirements

The selected finalist is required to review and sign a Physical Demands Analysis (PDA) for this position and may be required to complete a tuberculosis screening prior to hire.

Additional Requirements

The selection process may include screening the top candidate(s) on their criminal history, predatory offender registration, offender associations, and/or other applicable background information in accordance with Department of Corrections’ policy. Top candidate(s) must pass a criminal history check which includes successful completion of all sentencing and/or restitution requirements of law enforcement jurisdictions, including probation. Employment history/reference checks, including incidents of sexual harassment, will also be conducted on the top candidate(s) in accordance with Department of Corrections’ policy.

This may include a review of job performance and discipline records. New employees will be fingerprinted within the first 30 days of employment.

The Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC) does not participate in E‑Verify. The DOC will not sponsor applicants for work visas, including F‑1 STEM OPT extensions. All applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
