Job OverviewThis position supports, empowers, and promotes the success of SCTCC’s first‑generation college students by fostering an inclusive environment where all students feel valued and supported.
Key Responsibilities- Advocate for first‑generation students by connecting them with wraparound support services and campus resources.
- Build rapport through regular outreach, progress monitoring, and leadership of workshops, events, and tabling efforts that promote student engagement.
- Partner with faculty, advisors, and campus departments to coordinate comprehensive support and develop retention and completion strategies tailored to student needs.
- Help cultivate a sense of belonging by creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive space where students can express needs and access resources.
- Two years of related experience in education, student development, psychology, sociology, counseling, or a related field.
- Master’s degree may substitute for 18 months of related experience;
Bachelor’s degree may substitute for one year;
Associate’s degree may substitute for six months. - Experience supporting students in their academic journey, particularly in transition and success.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and active listening skills.
- Ability to take initiative in leading projects independently while collaborating effectively with colleagues, students, and community partners.
- Ability to apply equity‑minded practices to support the academic success and engagement of students from diverse backgrounds.
- Bachelor’s degree in education, student development, psychology, sociology, counseling, or a related field.
- Experience working with or understanding challenges faced by first‑generation college students.
- Experience developing and leading workshops, tabling events, and proactive student outreach.
- Experience tracking and interpreting data relevant to the work and using it for improvement.
- Experience sustaining productive collaborative relationships with faculty and staff in support of student success.
- Demonstrated ability to build strong rapport, establish trust, and inspire joy and purpose with students.
- Bilingual/multilingual in Spanish, Somali, French, Hmong, or other languages that reflect the student body and communities.
- Maintain a stationary position for long periods while performing computer‑based tasks.
- Operate a computer keyboard and standard office equipment with precision.
- Engage in tasks that require reviewing information on a screen or in written documents for sustained periods.
- Move about campus to access equipment or meet with colleagues.
- Occasionally transport or move files, office materials, or equipment weighing up to 10 pounds.
- Organize and handle documents that may require reaching, bending, or light filing.
- Employee driving on college/university business who use a rental or state vehicle must satisfy Minnesota State’s vehicle use criteria and consent to a Motor Vehicle Records check.
- Background check, including:
Criminal Background Check, Employment Record Review (current and former State employees only), Employment Reference Check, Conflict of Interest Review. - Must be eligible to work in the United States; H‑1B sponsorship not available.
