School Counselor

Schedule:

Hourly. Hours may vary based on program needs.

Reports To:

Building Principals. Supervision:
None. Salary: $59,497 - $90,362/yr.

Qualifications:

Required
• Current Counseling License issued by the Minnesota Department of Education
• Master's Degree in School Counseling Preferred
• Two years' experience working with students in a school setting
• Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds
• Experience with mental health counseling
• Experience with Alcohol and Drug counseling

Position Summary

To provide a comprehensive school counseling program focused on chemical dependency issues which includes academic, career, and personal/social domains designed to fit the needs of each school's unique population and characteristics. The School Counselor provides programming that includes conflict resolution skills, coping and refusal skills, character education, diversity, and study skills.

  • Knowledge of group guidance philosophies
  • Knowledge of normal developmental milestones for school-aged children
  • Knowledge of individual and group counseling techniques
  • Knowledge of students' academic, social, and emotional needs
  • Knowledge of community resources for school-aged students and their families
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, faculty, and supervisors
Essential Duties

Counseling / Assessment / Outreach

  • Foster the personal growth, educational development, and emotional well-being of students
  • Provide individual and group counseling in areas such as social skills, grief/healing, transitions, and anger management
  • Create a positive, caring, and nurturing learning environment
  • Consult with teachers, staff, parents, and community members regarding student needs
  • Participate in meetings regarding student placement and programming
  • Collaborate with community resources to support students experiencing homelessness, abuse, family changes, grief, alcoholism, or incarceration
  • Provide family outreach and serve as a school-family liaison
  • Coordinate hospital or homebound instruction and treatment-related school supports

Career and Post-High School Counseling (Secondary Level)

  • Coordinate visits from colleges, military representatives, and post-secondary programs
  • Provide financial aid information and guidance to students and families
  • Write letters of recommendation for employment, scholarships, and post-secondary opportunities
  • Assist classroom teachers with career instruction planning
  • Maintain current career and training resources within the Guidance Center
  • Organize career seminars and student career exploration opportunities
  • Review credits and approve diplomas for students completing work at the Area Learning Center
  • Assist students in course selection and registration processes
  • Review curriculum changes and prepare registration materials

Promotion and Recognition of Student Achievement (Secondary Level)

  • Disseminate scholarship and honors information
  • Identify and recognize students receiving honors
  • Serve on scholarship committees
  • Conduct awards programming

Registration & Curriculum Involvement

  • Recommend changes to master schedules and assist with school scheduling and class lists

Inservice and Professional Development

  • Participate in data retreats, leadership teams, and intervention teams
  • Provide in-service training for school personnel
  • Participate in orientation sessions for new teachers and student teachers
  • Represent the guidance department on faculty committees
  • Serve as a resource person for college classes and interested groups
  • Participate in the planning and evaluation of district-wide guidance curriculum

Maintenance of Records

  • Maintain accurate student grades and credit records
  • Approve transcript requests
  • Maintain official class rank information
  • Compile graduating class accountability reports
  • Complete annual guidance department reports
  • Other duties as assigned
