Apex Engineering Group has openings for an Engineering Technician in the Transportation Group. These positions are flexible and can be performed from any of our Apex offices or in a hybrid arrangement.
The role focuses on Transportation projects but may also support the Municipal and Water/Wastewater groups as needed. Responsibilities include providing CADD and field support services for the design and construction of highway, urban roadway, or municipal projects. The technician will apply basic civil engineering design principles and construction methods in the office and in the field, working as part of a team during the design and development of project plans.
Technicians report to a Project Manager or Senior Engineer.
- Prepare detailed dimensional drawings and design layouts from rough sketches, redline corrections, topographic surveys, etc. using CADD software such as AutoCAD and Micro Station.
- Follow direction and execute multiple tasks assigned by project managers, engineers, and lead technicians in the development of project plans and specifications.
- Calculate dimensions, square footage, roadway and utility profiles, material quantities, etc. using computer programs and calculators.
- Continuously develop proficiency with CADD software to prepare plan documents.
- Adhere to company and client CADD standards and procedures when required.
- Assist with and develop skills for construction observation/inspection, surveying, and materials testing.
- Serve as resident project representative (RPR) and owner's representative on construction projects.
- Communicate effectively with contractors and manage confrontational situations.
- Communicate regularly with supervisors and project managers to report construction progress and potential issues.
- Document construction progress and quantities in field diaries and enter data into automated record systems.
- Attend company, project, and client meetings on a regular basis.
- Follow company employee handbook and mandated safety policies.
- Perform responsibilities with a conscientious, legal, and ethical approach and a strong attention to detail.
- Work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Participate in training opportunities to develop technical and interpersonal skills.
- Travel and stay out of town as required; overtime may be necessary during construction season.
- Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate’s Degree in Engineering Technology or a technical drafting degree highly desirable (applicable experience may be accepted).
- Minimum 2–5 years of experience preferred.
- Proficiency, or willingness to become proficient, in AutoCAD/Civil‑3D, Bentley Open Roads Designer, and Micro Station Connect.
- Experience with additional CADD software such as Sketch Up Pro or Arc Map GIS considered a plus.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows/Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) required.
- Willingness to engage with people and work in team environments.
- Detail‑oriented, self‑motivated with strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Valid driver’s license required or ability to obtain one.
- Willingness to travel and spend time out of town while performing RPR duties or other business responsibilities.
- Operate a computer under normal ergonomic office conditions.
- Work outdoors during construction season.
- Stand and walk for prolonged periods during construction observation and surveying.
- Lift and move up to 10 pounds routinely, and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Adhere to scheduled and required hours.
- Perform essential duties satisfactorily; reasonable accommodations available for disabilities.

Hourly Base Pay Range: $24 – $34 (actual base pay depends on experience, education, licensure, job location, and internal equity).
