Job DescriptionThis role plays a critical part in managing capital investments and ensuring financial accuracy across a complex, multi‑entity environment. The Staff Accountant will serve as a key partner to Accounting, Finance, and Operations teams, providing oversight and insight into fixed assets, capital expenditures, and lease accounting. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys ownership, cross‑functional collaboration, and driving process improvements in a high‑impact position.
Responsibilities- Own and support the Capital Acquisition Request (CAR) process, ensuring all capital expenditures are properly approved, documented, and tracked.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on capitalization and lease accounting, advising teams on capital vs. expense decisions.
- Establish and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets throughout their lifecycle.
- Monitor and manage Construction in Progress (CIP), ensuring timely and accurate capitalization of completed projects.
- Partner with project managers and operational leaders to track budgets, timelines, and overall project performance.
- Provide insights and flag risks related to budget overruns or milestone delays.
- Maintain and reconcile the fixed asset subledger to the general ledger on a monthly basis.
- Record and manage depreciation, asset transfers, retirements, and capitalization entries.
- Prepare and maintain roll forwards for fixed assets, CIP, depreciation, and leases.
- Oversee property tax accounting, including accruals and payments.
- Manage the full lease lifecycle in compliance with ASC 842, including new leases, renewals, modifications, and terminations.
- Maintain accurate asset inventories, identifying aging, impaired, or obsolete assets.
- Prepare audit‑ready documentation and support internal, external, and regulatory audits.
- Deliver reporting and analysis related to capital investments and asset activity.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Experience in fixed asset accounting, including capitalization, depreciation, and asset lifecycle management.
- Strong understanding of GAAP, including lease accounting standards (ASC 842).
- Experience managing Construction in Progress (CIP) and capital projects.
- Proven ability to reconcile subledgers to the general ledger and prepare accurate financial reporting.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively across departments and communicate financial concepts to non‑finance stakeholders.
- Proficiency in accounting systems and Microsoft Excel.
- Experience in retail, grocery, or multi‑location operations.
- Experience working in a high‑growth or multi‑entity environment.
- Familiarity with capital budgeting and forecasting processes.
- CPA or progress toward certification.
- Experience supporting audits and working with external auditors.
