Environmental Health Specialist

This is professional work in performing inspections, investigations, education, and compliance work in the field of Environmental Health for the protection and promotion of public health and safety. Work involves the performance of duties related to the education and regulation of food establishments, public swimming pools, lodging establishments, manufactured home parks, and massage establishments. Responsibilities include maintaining liaison with environmental, planning, and related agencies and general supervision of personnel engaged in related activities.

Work is performed within established municipal and state guidelines and requires the exercise of considerable independent judgment and initiative.

• Instructs and educates facility operators in the general requirements of environmental standards, inspection techniques, and evidence requirements.

• Reviews plans for construction of new food, beverage and lodging establishments; interviews applicants for food licenses.

• Inspects establishments engaged in food, beverage, lodging, manufactured home parks, recreational camping and massage to assure that safe and healthful standards are being observed; issues compliance orders; attempts to gain compliance through instruction, education and persuasion; prepares formal complaints on uncorrected violations.

• Inspects public and private institutions to determine extent of pollution problems, determines need for control equipment and approves the installation of equipment; issues compliance orders.

• Performs occasional surveys of water supply and sewage disposal provisions to determine their adequacy or the need for more strict enforcement of health and sanitation ordinances.

• Consults with industry and government agencies regarding environmental health considerations.

• Conducts physical noise monitoring in the City and vehicle noise tests.

• Conducts routine pool water testing and inspects all City public pools.

• Responds to citizen inquiries; represents the City at community activities that include air quality and noise program displays.

• Occasionally assists personnel with duties from other department divisions such as nuisance, animal control, zoning, and rental housing inspections.
